A. M. Frost: Näkymätön kuolema / Death is invisible

Last week I wrote about two of my friends who dreamed of writing a book. The first 190-sheet manuscript had not taken fire. It was time to write another.

Se kertoi syksyn 1939 tapahtumista Suomessa. Sota on ovella koko Euroopassa. Ylimääräiset kertausharjoitukset päättyvät siten kuin toiset pelkäsivät ja toiset eivät koskaan uskoneet mahdolliseksi: Neuvostoliitto hyökkää Suomeen käyttäen selityksenä Mainilan lavastettuja laukauksia.

It told about the events of the autumn 1939 in Finland. The war is at the door all over Europe.
Excessive military refresher training ends as others feared and others never believed it possible: the Soviet Union attacks Finland explaining it with the static shots of Mainila.

Käsikirjoituksessa politiikan ja sodan faktakentillä seikkailee fiktiivisiä hahmoja Mannerheimin pojaksi väitetyn majuri Peder Jangin johdolla. Jang on komea ja suomalaisittain eksoottisen näköinen mies mustine hiuksineen ja hieman vinoilta vaikuttavine sinisine silmineen.

The script was leaned on political and war facts with fictional characters led by Major Peder Jang who is asserted to be Mannerheim's son. Jang is a handsome and in Finland exotic looking man with black hair and slightly oblique blue eyes.

Sotanäyttämölle Jang valitsee lähetikseen aran Aulis Rasilan Helsingin Pasilasta. Jangin oikea käsi on vähän liian sympaattinen ja kiltti vääpeli Yrjö Valkama. Omasta mielestään Valkama ei ole kiltti, vaan pelottava sotilas, jonka karhumainen ulkonäkökin puhuu asian puolesta. Helsingistä käsin auttelee Helsingin Sanomain toimittaja Arno Hautala, joka ei suureksi pettymyksekseen pääse silmävammansa takia rintamalle.

For the military scene, Jang chooses a shy young man Aulis Rasila from Pasila, Helsinki to work as his messenger. Jang's right hand is a bit too sympathetic and nice warrant officer Yrjö Valkama. In his own opinion, Valkama is not kind, but a fearful soldier whose bear like appearance is a good proof for that. From Helsinki Jang is helped by reporter Arno Hautala of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. For his deep disappointment Hautala is not accepted to military service because of his wounded eye.

Jang's worst but also most liked opponent is the agent of the Finnish secret police, Ms Helle Haaga with whom Jang would like to compete his skills even more.

Ja sitten taas: käsikirjoitus kustantajakierrokselle ja sormet ristiin. Viikossa tuli vastaus kahdeltakin kustantajalta.

And then again: manuscript for publisher round and fingers crossed. During the same week they got an answer from two publishers. My friends had reached the two percent who pass the sieve and get the publishing contract!

A. M. Frost: Näkymätön kuolema, Bazar Kustannus

Drumming, champagne and fireworks? Perhaps a bit, but also as many months for editing as the original writing took time. For it is a large team who works with the manuscript before publishing: managing editor, publishing editor, history facts' inspector and proofreader.

Silloin otetaan vastaan palautetta.

I went now and then to greet those once more pale authors. I understood that occasionally they would have liked to straighten or get a bit easier. But at the time when the book was published, 10 October 2018, they were obviously grateful for all the challenges and every mistake the team had found. Because a book once printed can no longer be corrected. Then you just wait for feedback.

I called the Frosts while writing this and asked for possible feedback. Most of all they were afraid of mistakes, but at least none of their friends had found them. And that is good, because at least in my opinion, books and magazines have a lot of spelling mistakes today.

Of course, the lack of errors does not yet make the book good. Feedback from official book critics has not yet reached their eyes. The publishers reader panel raised passion to one and other direction.

"But at least it is not flat and dull", said the Frosts.

Palaan vielä ensi viikolla Frostien tarinaan, sillä kysyin heiltä kahdestaan kirjoittamisen tekniikasta. Miten se oikein tapahtuu, kirjoittavatko he vuorotellen vai luvusta riippuen?

Next week I will once more return to the story of these authors, for I asked them about their writing techniques. How do they write, alternately or depending on the chapter in question?

Paluu murrosikään / Return to puberty

My friend is a long-range book professional who also has a used books' shop in Internet.

Sain häneltä kirjan, jota en oma-aloitteisesti koskaan olisi tullut lukeneeksi: Marja-Liisa Vartion "Ja sodan vuosiin sattui nuoruus". Vartiota pidetään yhtenä suomalaisen romaanin uudistajista. Silti, naisille yhä tänäkin päivänä tunnusomaisesti hän taitaa olla enemmän tunnettu Paavo Haavikon vaimona. Vartio kuoli vuonna 1966 vain 41 vuoden ikäisenä.

She gave me a book that I would never had read on my own initiative: Marja-Liisa Vartio's "And in the years of war, youth has happened". Vartio is considered one of the reformists of the Finnish novel. Still, characteristic for women even now, she is more likely to be a well-known spouse of Paavo Haavikko. Vartio died in 1966 at the age of only 41.

Kirjan on Vartion teini-iän päiväkirjojen perusteella toimittanut Anna-Liisa Haavikko. Hän puolestaan on filosofian maisteri ja toimittaja. Ja taas tunnusomaisesti: Paavo Haavikon miniä.

The book is edited from Vartio's teens-age diaries by Anna-Liisa Haavikko. She is, in turn, Master of Science and journalist. And again characteristicly: Paavo Haavikko's daughter-in-law.

Since I am a great friend of books with plot, especially detective stories, I opened Vartio's book bit cautious. And what a treasure it included - it absorbed me immediately to Vartio's world. Young Marja-Liisa wrote her diary during the autumn at the beginning of the Winter War.

It was wonderful to remember again how life felt at teenage years. If you do not remember, here's a few examples. It also serves as a guide for the parents of teenaged children. For the sake of perspective, I will also write here, how it feels like now in a similar situation.

Kaikki olisi parhaimmillaan hyvin romanttista.

Teenage Marja-Liisa: Boys are very interesting. More than of the boy himself, however, she is interested in the feeling and the thoughts that the boy wakes up. So falls in love with falling in love. Falling in love happens almost every week. Everything would be at its best very romantic.

Minä: Pintakiilto ei kiinnosta. Kulta on ihmisessä siellä sisällä. Olisi kauhean stressaavaa alkaa opetella toista ihmistä taas alusta. Mutta romantiikassahan ei mitään vikaa ole. Kaikki saisi mielellään olla hyvin romanttista.

Me: The surface gloss does not interest. Gold is in man inside. It would be terribly stressful to start learning another person again from the beginning. But there is nothing wrong with romanticism. Everything could rather be very romantic.

Teini: Aina on liian lihava, olipa miten laiha hyvänsä. Ja tukka on aina huonosti.

Teen: You are always too fat, no matter how skinny. And the hair is always badly.

Minä: Jos turvottaa vähän vähemmän, päivä on hyvä. Viis painosta. Tukka on edelleen aina huonosti.

Me: If you swell a little less, the day is good. Don't mind the weight. The hair is still always badly.

Teini: Ihailee luontoa ja isänmaatakin jalkojensa juuressa. Tähdet tuikkivat kirkkaasti, ja metsän rauha hyväilee.

Teen: Admires nature and fatherland at her feet. The stars shine brightly, and the peace of the wood caresses.

Me: Can't go to nature, insect allergy. And in winter it is either too wet or too much snow.

Teini: On tärkeää puhua katu-uskottavasti.

Teen: It is important to talk street-believably. In the autumn of 1939 everything was "different nice" or "horsesh" (= sweet).

Me: It's important not to be so tired that I can still talk about something.

Teini: Mutsi ei ymmärrä.

Teen: Mum does not understand.

Minä: Lapset eivät ymmärrä.

Me: Children do not understand.

Teen: It's glorious if a brother or boyfriend has to give up his life in front of his fatherland. It's a gift for this country.

Minä: Pelkään neuroottisesti, että läheisille tapahtuu jotain. Vaikka Suomessa on rauha. Luojan kiitos.

Me: I'm neuroticly afraid that something happens to my closed ones. Although there is peace in Finland. Thank God.
