Kuinka käsitellä hyviä uutisia / How to treat good news

We Finns do not have the habit of spreading our feelings to the public.

Example: What happened when Helsinki was bombed for the first time in World War II? Nothing. So, of course, ninety-one people were killed and two and a half hundred were wounded, while three bombers in the morning and nine in the afternoon roamed over the city. Some twenty buildings were destroyed or damaged in one day.

Ihmiset varmaan joutuivat hysterian valtaan?

People would probably have come to hysteria? They did not. When the bombing was ceased, people stood just as quietly and calmly in conversation on the streets as before. The police had to force traders to leave the marketplace before the sale was suspended and the market was cleared.

Piste. Huonot uutiset ovat oletusasetus.

We Finns do not have any bigger steel nerves than the rest of us. But we have got used to bad news and we know how to deal with them. And feelings are not shown. Dot. Bad news is the default setting.

I've told about our commonly owned horse Exuberance, i.e. Esa, whose early years in Finland were something between the comic and the unimaginable. He did not agree to go training to the forest road, but jumped up to protest and changed direction on the narrow road. He tensed in the races and disgusted the pattering sand on his face. When the races went better, an abscess split the hoof. But what about that, pretty much standard. Bad news is the default setting.

Kunnes sitten rauhallinen käsittely ja hevosen ehdoilla tapahtuva valmennus Ravitalli Markus Dahlströmillä alkoi kantaa hedelmää: Ruotsista tullut Esu rupesi muuttumaan suomalaiseksi. Tunteita ei näytetä. Se hoidetaan, mikä eteen tulee. Ja loppujen lopuksi siitähän rupeaa nauttimaan.

Until then, the fruits of the peaceful handling and coaching at Trotting Stable Markus Dahlström began to emerge: Esu, born in Sweden, began to change into a Finn. The feelings are not showed. Whatever comes in front of you, it is handled. And after all,  you will enjoy it.

After the winter break Esu has learned to fly, now there is a four-victory pipe behind. The radio is often on in the stable. Perhaps Esu has listened to Stephen Hawking's words: "Look up to the stars, not down to your feet". Not even to the point where the crack has not yet fully grown out of the hoof.

Esu miettii, miten hyviä uutisia käsitellään. Esu ponders how good news should be handled.

How can I, a Finn, handle such good news? There is, then, learning for me. Do not expect a flash to hit again around the corner. Do not miss a single day, not even those good ones. If Esu learned, I guess I will learn, too.

Tästä voit katsoa Esun viimeisimmän lähdön, numero 7 Exuberance.

From here you can watch Esu's latest start, number 7 Exuberance.

Mitä Esalle kuuluu? What's up, Esa?

Viime vuoden joulukuussa kerroin siitä, kuinka perheestämme tuli ravurin osaomistaja ja kuinka Esa-hevonen sai nimensä.

In December last year, I told about how our family became a part owner of a trotter and how Esa the horse got his name.

And about how Esa's i.e. Exuberance's career began in Finland. None of us really was bored.

Tiimimme ammattilaiset valitsivat Exuberancen meille kilpahevoseksi.

Our team's professionals chose Exuberance for our racing horse. There would have been many choices, but finally this horse was chosen after a long search. E. never won, but always run up to the finish line. So yes, there had to be something good in him.

It soon became clear that Esa really did not leave friends, not in races or at all. From a large herd in Sweden became a horse who was closely dependent of other horses, and tensed almost everything. He could not even be brushed in the corridor without taking another horse to accompany him there.

Alkoi totuttelu Ravitalli Markus Dahlströmin tavoille: yksilöllinen, rauhallinen, säännöllinen hoito ja ulkoilu omassa tarhassa. Esa alkoi rentoutua ja rauhoittua. Itseluottamus kasvoi.

He had to start getting used to the Racing Stable Markus Dahlström's habits: personal, calm, regular care and outdoor activities in his own fencing. Esa began to relax and calm down. Self-confidence grew. He noticed that he is able to cope independently. Then was born a tame Esa, a quiet guy who loved children, carrots and routines.

All our five grandchildren may consider Esa as their own horse. Also this young gentleman drops the toys at once and small feet scurry in front of the television when he hears that Esa's start is beginning.

And routines are important to Esa, really. If, beside the training track, the salt bags are in a different place, Esa's world will get scared and off the trails. Or if mash has temporarily run out and is not served with evening meal, it is a big deal for Esa. There aren't many nutrients in mash, but it tastes good in the mouth. And BELONGS to the supper.

Jopa mahtavalta.

A year ago in the summer, Esa had an amazing idea. You know, when an apple drifts from tree to your head and you invent the gravity. In the races of Savonlinna, Esa was busy with the crowd and enjoyed it. But the driver said that he should bypass the other horses. Then it happened: Esa figured out that in the races you have to run past others. And that it feels good. Even great.

Vastoinkäymisistä huolimatta kahdeksasta startista viisi on päättynyt voittoon, mikä on kyllä loistosuoritus. Kolmen peräkkäisen voiton putki alkoi jälleen kotiraveista.

It started a boom that alternated with the ever-improving starts and the hardships. First there was an abscess that split the hoof. When that had cured, then came a lymphadenitis. Despite of the difficulties five starts from eight in total have brought the first price, which is a tour de force. The tube of three wins began again from the home races.

In any case, the tame Esu was gone. E. is still kind and golden but knows he is a pretty strong runner. If a couple of days have gone from the last training, "exuberance" begins to overcome. I greatly respect Markus Dahlström, who again and again sits on Esa's cart. I do not know how much I ought to be paid for sitting behind that dynamite bar. At least a ton would not be enough, even though I need money.

Now we are waiting for the "Jokimaa makes stars" preliminary race. It is Esa's autumn's main goal, even though the Finnish prime racing course Vermo has already been conquered on two Wednesdays. Link to the race through Hippos here, Esa's number there is 9. However it goes, I just hope for two things: That Esa may go there healthy. And that the race is a fair conquest horse against horse. Often Esa has given the others handicap by galloping at the start or by a poor starting number. Or if not anything else, then the shoe has detached during the race. There is nothing with that, it belongs to the character of the races. But it would be so great to see a fair bout.

Onko raveissa hauskaa, mitä? / Is it fun in horce races, what?

Olen aiemmin kirjoittanut siitä, miltä hevosesta tuntuu ravikilpailuihin osallistuminen.

I have previously written about the feelings of a horse when attending a race.

Mutta miltä se (osa)omistajasta tuntuu? Tältä:

But how does a (part)owner feel about it? Like this:

Klo 7.15: Aamu tuntuu hyvältä, puuro maistaa, mihinkään ei ihme kyllä koske. Työt sujuvat hyvin.

At 7.15 am: The morning feels good, the porridge tastes, no pain anywhere, miracle. Work goes smoothly.

Klo 15.00: Mazda starttaa pihasta. Ihailen Suomen luontoa matkan varrella.

At 3.00 pm: Mazda starts out at the yard. I admire the nature of Finland along the way.

Klo 17.30: Perillä. Heti moikkaamaan Esaa. Hän katselee pilttuustaan rauhallisen ja virkeän näköisenä. Hyvä, ei jännitä siis.

At 5.30 pm: Arrive. Right away to say hello to Esa. He looks in his stall box with a calm and brisk look. Good, no excitement.

Klo 18.00: Käyn moikkaamassa tuttuja tallialueella. Kehuskelen sillä, että olen oppinut hallitsemaan ravijännityksen. Haluan vain nauttia tunnelmasta.

At 6 pm: I go to say hello to friends at the stall area. Brag by the fact that I have learned to manage the trot race tension. I just want to enjoy the atmosphere.

Klo 18.30: Ruokahaluni on mennyttä. Mitä ihmettä? Raveissa olisi ihan pakko saada grillimakkara.

At 6.30 pm: My appetite is gone. What on earth? In races you should absolutely have a grill sausage.

Klo 19.00: Edelleenkään ei ruokahalua. Kiertelen levottomasti ympäriinsä. Vilkaisen askelmittaria. 7650 askelta.

At 7 pm: Still no appetite. I'm walking anxiously around. Quick glance at the pedometer. 7650 steps.

Esa lämmittelemässä / warming up.

Klo 19.45: En pysty enää tekemään muuta, kuin istumaan jähmettyneenä patsaana katsomon edessä olevalla penkillä. Jalat eivät toimi.

At 7.45 pm: I can not do anything other than sit as a freezed statue on the bench in front of the auditorium. Legs don't move.

Klo 19.55: Vatsassa on jokin iso ja ilkeä pallo. Ehkä keilapallo.

At 7.55 pm: A big and nasty ball in the stomach. Maybe a bowling ball.

Klo 20.00: Pallo on noussut vatsasta rintaan ja puristaa sydäntä.

At 8 pm: The ball has risen from the stomach to the chest and squeezes the heart.

Klo 20.10: Pulssi on hirveä, mutta on liian myöhäistä ottaa beetasalpaajaa.

At 8.10 pm: The pulse is awful, but it's too late to take the beta blocker.

Klo 20.15: Oksettaa. En saa henkeä. Onkohan täällä missä ensiapupiste?

At 8.15 pm: I will soon need to puke. I can not breathe. Is there a first aid point here?

Klo 20.20: Huomaan vielä olevani hengissä. Katson käsiini. Käsiohjelma on kosteana ja tahmeana myttynä kourieni välissä.

At 8.20 pm: Notice I'm still alive. I look into my hands. The manual program is moist and sticky in my fist.

Klo 20.25: Ilokseni jalat toimivat taas.

At 8.25 pm: Glad to notice that my legs work again. I'm going to congratulate Esa, the driver and the caretaker. The fifth place in a hard company returning from a long pause was a superb result. Esa had been under heavy pressure behind the starting car, but kept his nose and did not gallop.

Klo 21.45: Tapaaminen hevosautolla matkustavien kanssa huoltoasemalla hampurilaisella. Ollaan niitä ylpeitä ja onnellisia kaikki. Käyn ostamassa Esalle porkkanoita.

At 9.45 pm: Meeting with others traveling with the horse car at a gas station beside a hamburger. We are so proud and happy everyone. I'm going to buy carrots for Esa.

Esan matkassa 1/2 / Along with Esa 1/2

Sain olisiko minusta hevosenomistajaksi -testissä 11 pistettä. Suunta oli selvä: kimppahevosta kohti.

I got 11 points in the test could I be a horse owner. The direction was clear: a commonly owned horse for our family.

Eli tallissa.

It was kind of a surprise that there were so few horses for sale in Finland. That is, horses aged ready to race.

Tiimimme prot käyttivät verkostojaan. Etelä-Ruotsista löytyi useampikin potentiaalinen ravuri. Lopulta he päätyivät 4-vuotiaaseen ruunaan nimeltään Esa.

The pros in our Team were using their networks. In South Sweden they found more than one potential trotter. Finally, they ended up choosing a 4-year-old gelding named Esa.

Esa has a posh real name, but only a few can write it. And no one can pronounce. Except my friend Tina, who tried to teach me, too. However, the name had too many ksz's and dzs's added. Tina ended up recommending: say Esa. Or say Esukka.

And then came the day when Esukka came to Finland. We called the pros in the transportation car on its way: how does he look like? "Looks like a horse."

When Esa backed up from the car to the stable yard my first thought was o' dear, he is tall. And beautiful. Having come from south Esa had a smooth short coat and ears trimmed. At the same time, Finnish horses had a thick hairy winter coat. All the Team thought he is so pretty. So if he does not like trotting let's bring him to a match show :)

Hitto soikoon - var är jag? Är jag nu en mamu?
Damn - where am I? Am I now an immigrant?

A terrible culture shock, that it what Esa had to encounter. He was badly addicted to his former herd and was now separated from it. In addition, Esa suffered from week nerves.

Sinä ja sun porkkanas! Var är minä vänner?
You and your carrots! Where are my friends?

At the beginning addiction to close friends went so far that he needed another horse with him at the stable hallway when brushing. After Esa's nerves began to tighten his head rose to the heights. Sometimes it seemed that soon he goes through the roof.

Ensimmäisissä hiitti- eli harjoitusraveissa kotiradalla ressukan hermot kiristyivät niin paljon, että meikäläistä vierestäkatsojaa hirvitti. Nyt olivat omat hermoni rullalla. En uskaltanut mennä lähellekään. Ihailin miten ajaja ja hoitaja pysyivät tyyninä. Esa hot - ohjastaja cool.

At the first heat or workout races at the home track poor thing's nerves tightened so much that I hardly dared look at him. Now, my nerves were rolled up. I did not dare go anywhere near. I marveled at how the driver and attendant remained calm. Esa hot - driver cool.

Kohta mennään katosta läpi. Mutta Ukkikin oli cool.
Soon we will go through the roof. But Grandpa was cool, too.

Tuli aika lähteä oikeisiin raveihin. Miten kävi? Sen kerron viikon päästä.

After a while it was time to attend real races. How did it go? That I will tell you next Friday.

Ja lopuksi elämänohje nuorille:

And finally, guideline in life for juniors:

Älä anna huijata itseäsi vanhalla sanonnalla "anna hevosen murehtia koska sillä on isompi pää". Se ei todellakaan pidä paikkaansa!!!!

Do not allow yourself be cheated by the old term "let the horse worry because it has a bigger head." It is certainly not true !!!!
