Kahdestaan kirjoittamisen tekniikat / Writing twosome

Olen parissa blogissa kertonut ystävistäni, jotka kirjoittivat kirjan: A. M. Frost, Näkymätön kuolema. Kustantaja on Bazar Kustannus.

I have blogged of two of my friends, who wrote a book: A. M. Frost, Death is inivisible by the publisher Bazar.

When I read it, I always tried to guess which one of them wrote what chapter. The same idea seems to have been with the publisher's reader panelists.

One of them wrote this way: The beginning was slightly disturbed by the feeling that the chapters would be different pairs with each other. This was explained by the fact that at a later stage I found out that there are two authors. As the book progressed, this matter ceased to disturb. Maybe the writer has not changed anymore?

Esimerkiksi kirjailijanimi Lars Kepler on ruotsalainen aviopari. Ja telkkarissa melkein kaikissa sarjoissa on takana kirjoittajatiimi. Miten työt jaetaan? Oli pakko kysyä Frosteilta.

It must be admitted that I have no idea how authors generally write twosome. For example, Lars Kepler is a Swedish married couple. And in TV, there is almost always a writer team behind a series. How are the jobs distributed? Had to ask Frosts.

Vuorotellen, ei yhtä aikaa. Alternately, not at the same time.

Eivät hekään tienneet, miten muut toimivat. Mutta heidän oma tekniikkansa oli minulle yllätys.

Even they did not know how others work. But their own technique was a surprise to me.

Jokaisen luvun alussa M. Frost kertoo A. Frostille ajan, paikan, henkilöt ja sen, mitä tapahtuu. Sen jälkeen A. Frost menee paikan päälle. Ehkä se on jokin mielen palatsi -juttu, en tiedä. Se vaatii kuulemma ehdottoman hiljaisuuden keskittymisen takia. Koska hän on aamuihminen, kirjoittaminen tapahtuu aamupäivällä voimien ollessa parhaassa terässä.

At the beginning of each chapter, M. Frost describes to A. Frost the time, the place, the people and what will happen. Then A. Frost goes to the place. Maybe it's a palace of mind -thing, I do not know. But it requires absolute silence because of the concentration. And for a morning person, writing is happening in the morning.

After about half an hour's work a fly on the ceiling -state has been reached. People are seen, scents are smelled, cold or hot felt. People have started to live, and A. Frost is trying frenzy to hack the computer's keyboard to keep track of everything seen and heard. It is not possible to control people, and not put words in their mouths.

Kuka tuon on kirjoittanut?

The technique is obviously exhausting, and after that a rest needed. If the text is not read during the same day, the events will surprise A. Frost, too. Who has written that?

Mutta nyt ymmärrän lukijapanelistien kommentit:

But now I understand the comments of reader panelists:

A very cinematic story! The best thing about the book was its cinematic / pictorial progression. The events were described so that they were very easy to imagine in your mind, just to the big screen.

The characters were so well depicted that one learned to know them and see in one's eyes. The places were also described so that it was easy to be on the spot with the eyes of one's soul. Rarely you go along with the book so that you feel yourself involved in the story, and not just the outsider to whom the story is told.

When reading the book, it seemed to me that I could live in the events, as if I had secretly infiltrated people and their lives.

Answer to the question asked in the beginning: none of the chapters are written by either.

A. M. Frost: Näkymätön kuolema / Death is invisible

Last week I wrote about two of my friends who dreamed of writing a book. The first 190-sheet manuscript had not taken fire. It was time to write another.

Se kertoi syksyn 1939 tapahtumista Suomessa. Sota on ovella koko Euroopassa. Ylimääräiset kertausharjoitukset päättyvät siten kuin toiset pelkäsivät ja toiset eivät koskaan uskoneet mahdolliseksi: Neuvostoliitto hyökkää Suomeen käyttäen selityksenä Mainilan lavastettuja laukauksia.

It told about the events of the autumn 1939 in Finland. The war is at the door all over Europe.
Excessive military refresher training ends as others feared and others never believed it possible: the Soviet Union attacks Finland explaining it with the static shots of Mainila.

Käsikirjoituksessa politiikan ja sodan faktakentillä seikkailee fiktiivisiä hahmoja Mannerheimin pojaksi väitetyn majuri Peder Jangin johdolla. Jang on komea ja suomalaisittain eksoottisen näköinen mies mustine hiuksineen ja hieman vinoilta vaikuttavine sinisine silmineen.

The script was leaned on political and war facts with fictional characters led by Major Peder Jang who is asserted to be Mannerheim's son. Jang is a handsome and in Finland exotic looking man with black hair and slightly oblique blue eyes.

Sotanäyttämölle Jang valitsee lähetikseen aran Aulis Rasilan Helsingin Pasilasta. Jangin oikea käsi on vähän liian sympaattinen ja kiltti vääpeli Yrjö Valkama. Omasta mielestään Valkama ei ole kiltti, vaan pelottava sotilas, jonka karhumainen ulkonäkökin puhuu asian puolesta. Helsingistä käsin auttelee Helsingin Sanomain toimittaja Arno Hautala, joka ei suureksi pettymyksekseen pääse silmävammansa takia rintamalle.

For the military scene, Jang chooses a shy young man Aulis Rasila from Pasila, Helsinki to work as his messenger. Jang's right hand is a bit too sympathetic and nice warrant officer Yrjö Valkama. In his own opinion, Valkama is not kind, but a fearful soldier whose bear like appearance is a good proof for that. From Helsinki Jang is helped by reporter Arno Hautala of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. For his deep disappointment Hautala is not accepted to military service because of his wounded eye.

Jang's worst but also most liked opponent is the agent of the Finnish secret police, Ms Helle Haaga with whom Jang would like to compete his skills even more.

Ja sitten taas: käsikirjoitus kustantajakierrokselle ja sormet ristiin. Viikossa tuli vastaus kahdeltakin kustantajalta.

And then again: manuscript for publisher round and fingers crossed. During the same week they got an answer from two publishers. My friends had reached the two percent who pass the sieve and get the publishing contract!

A. M. Frost: Näkymätön kuolema, Bazar Kustannus

Drumming, champagne and fireworks? Perhaps a bit, but also as many months for editing as the original writing took time. For it is a large team who works with the manuscript before publishing: managing editor, publishing editor, history facts' inspector and proofreader.

Silloin otetaan vastaan palautetta.

I went now and then to greet those once more pale authors. I understood that occasionally they would have liked to straighten or get a bit easier. But at the time when the book was published, 10 October 2018, they were obviously grateful for all the challenges and every mistake the team had found. Because a book once printed can no longer be corrected. Then you just wait for feedback.

I called the Frosts while writing this and asked for possible feedback. Most of all they were afraid of mistakes, but at least none of their friends had found them. And that is good, because at least in my opinion, books and magazines have a lot of spelling mistakes today.

Of course, the lack of errors does not yet make the book good. Feedback from official book critics has not yet reached their eyes. The publishers reader panel raised passion to one and other direction.

"But at least it is not flat and dull", said the Frosts.

Palaan vielä ensi viikolla Frostien tarinaan, sillä kysyin heiltä kahdestaan kirjoittamisen tekniikasta. Miten se oikein tapahtuu, kirjoittavatko he vuorotellen vai luvusta riippuen?

Next week I will once more return to the story of these authors, for I asked them about their writing techniques. How do they write, alternately or depending on the chapter in question?

Kiikarissa kirjan julkaiseminen / Target: publishing a book

I'm certainly not the only one who has ever dreamed of a writer's profession - or even a book-publishing. A children's book I've published - after all, both children and books are close to my heart.

However, this story tells of two of my friends who decided to turn a new page into one's life after one of them suddenly got unemployed. Unemployment is a tough place, I know it by my own experience. Like a free fall, of which one does not know where it stops.

Ystäväni kertoivat toki tietävänsä, ettei kirjailijaksi ryhtyminen saata ratkaista työttömyysongelmaa. Kaunokirjallisuuden saralla keskiansio Suomessa on nimittäin 2 200 euroa.

They insured to know that even becoming an author might not solve the problem of unemployment. In fiction, you see, the average earning in Finland is € 2,200. Not per month, but per year. And in order to reach even that pay, they should get a publishing contract. About two percent of manuscripts sent to publishers pass through the sieve. And only a small authors' elite earn enough to live.

My friends, however, decided to try. And so began to be born a script, the first part of which went to the publishers around. It didn't even take long until denial answers began to fall into the mailbox. It was astonishing how many times the same dream was about to crumble. Nothing else could be done than to swallow and continue next morning - after all the hope was not entirely dead.

And then came the day when one publisher raised the manuscript one step further, to the list of potential newcomers. My friends felt like lottery winners. For two months. Then they noticed that the lottery ticket including the right numbers had not been sent, it had been forgotten. For the publisher sent an email: We are sorry, but due to our business arrangements we cannot take any new authors.

Vasta silloin toivo kuulema kuoli lopullisesti.

Only then did the hope finally die. The free fall had not stopped, slowed down for a moment and accelerated again.

Kuukauden kuluttua tapahtui jotain hyvin pientä ja aluksi merkityksettömän tuntuista. Meteorologi Edvard Lorenz tiivisti sen vuonna 1972 kysymykseksi: "Voiko perhosen siipien heilahdus Brasiliassa aiheuttaa tornadon Teksasissa?"

A month later, happened something that first appeared very small and insignificant. Meteorologist Edvard Lorenz summarized it in 1972 to a question: "Can the butterfly wing swing in Brazil cause a tornado in Texas?"

In the life of my friends the question was asked by the other of them one evening, and it was about as irrational as Lorenz's question: "Now listen, when marshal Mannerheim visited the hills of Mantšuria, so maybe he or someone else of his troupe got a son there?"

The other didn't even bother to answer. Stupid questions don't need an answer. Until after a couple of days: "Well, about that son of Mannerheim's, actually it feels pretty credible, even probable."At that moment was major Jang born. Actually in 1907 in China, but practically 110 years later in Finland.

Ystäväni nielaisivat taas, päättivät ottaa kirjailijanimekseen A. M. Frost ja palasivat koneen ääreen. Alkoi uuden nelisatasivuisen kirjan työstäminen. Se on muuten aanelosina satayhdeksänkymmentä liuskaa - kysyin asiaa heiltä jossain välissä. Silloin he olivat jo aika kalpeita, mutta edelleen hyvissä väleissä.

My friends swallowed again, decided to take A. M. Frost to their author name and went again in front of the computer. Began working on a new four hundred-page book. It is, by the way, a hundred and ninety strips - I asked them somewhere in between the pages. That was when they were already pale, but still in good terms.

198 liuskaa, 92286 sanaa, painettuna 436 kirjan sivua / 198 strips, 92286 words, 436 printed book pages

En pysty samaan kirjoitusvauhtiin kuin A. M. Frost. Ja minun pitää vielä kääntääkin tämä tarina. Lupaan kuitenkin palata tähän ihan lähiaikoina... Jos jaksat, niin pysy kanavalla.

And now I have to apologize, for I have to pause this story for a moment. I am not as fast a writer as A. M. Frost. And I still have to translate the story. However, I promise to return to this very soon... If only you feel up to it, stay on channel.

Kysymys- ja vastauspalsta: Miten pääsen mukaan #metoo-kampanjaan? Question and answer column: How can I get involved in the #metoo campaign?

Granny people are known to have seen everything and they have suffered even more. So it is no wonder that people will turn to them in need of advice. This is also evidenced by the e-mail that came to my virtual mailbox last week:

Hyvä Keltainen valo. Olen 48-vuotias poikamies Himanperältä. Ei keskustasta, jossa asuu 11 ihmistä. Vaan esikaupunkialueelta, sieltä idän puolelta.

Dear Keltainen valo. I am a 48-year-old bachelor from Himanperä, Finland. Not from the center where 11 people live. But from the suburbs, from the eastern side.

Kuten ymmärrät, ei täällä naisihmisiä solkenaan juokse. Viimeksi olen nähnyt sellaisen elävänä toissa viikolla lähimmän kasvukeskuksen marketin kassalla. Ja hänkin oli varattu, kysyin.

As you understand, this is not the place here for ladies to constantly run around. Most recently I have seen a woman alive last week at the nearest growth center's supermarket checkout. And she was already engaged, I asked.

No meille vedettiin viime kuussa tänne Himanperälle laajakaista.

Well, last month, we got a broadband connection as far as here to Himanperä. So now I see almost live women online. And there I came across with this #metoo campaign. I understand that it is about a kind of harassment. So now I ask, and hopefully you take this matter seriously !!!! how is it possible to get such a harassment?

T. nimimerkki "Himanperäntie 3643".

Yours sincerely, "Himanperä road 3643".

Hyvä "Himanperäntie 3643". Keltainen valo ottaa aina lukijoiden kysymykset vakavasti, siihen voit luottaa.

Keltainen valo always takes readers' questions seriously, you can count on it. However, I can not remember what it felt to be 48 years of age. That's why I asked my neighbor Taimi. She is already 102 years old, but the memory plays like a razor. None of her other parts is playing, but it does not matter much considering your question, does it?

Omasta puolestani sanon, että olet osin oikeassa. Useimpien kampanjoiden tarkoitus on haalia mahdollisimman paljon osanottajia. Epäonneksesi tämä kampanja on kuitenkin päinvastainen. Siinä yritetään päästä eroon ei-toivotusta aineksesta.

For my own part I say that you are partially correct. Most campaigns aim to attract as many participants as possible. However, and unfortunate to you, this campaign aims to quite opposite. It tries to get rid of unwanted material.

Taimi puolestaan sanoo, että ongelmasi on hänelle hyvinkin tuttu. Jatkosodan aikaan vuonna 1941 Taimi iski silmänsä erääseen komeaan tummakulmaiseen kapteeniin, jonka tukikohta oli Taimin kotikylällä. Kapteenin mokoma leikki vaikeasti saavutettavaa, vaikka Taimi kuinka yritti piirittää ja päästä nipistelemään.

For Taimi's part, she says that your problem is well known to her, too. During the Continuation War in 1941, Taimi got thrilled with a handsome dark captain whose fort was in Taimi's home village. The damned captain plaid difficult to reach, even how hard Taimi tried to surround and get close enough to tingle.

Taimin haaveet pirstoutuivat. Ja kapteeni myös.

Until then, in a beautiful afternoon while Taimi was at the lingonberry forest, it succeeded. The captain was searching the surroundings and Taimi got him trapped between two cliffs, where from he could not escape. And what happened? The enemy threw down an astray grenade and hit the captain. The dreams of Taimi were fragmented. And the captain too.

Osoitehan meillä jo on, laitatko kahvit tippumaan.

Did you understand? Don't worry, Taimi has promised to come and visit you to refresh old memories. Your address we already have. Would you mind putting a kettle on?

Kuinka käsitellä hyviä uutisia / How to treat good news

We Finns do not have the habit of spreading our feelings to the public.

Example: What happened when Helsinki was bombed for the first time in World War II? Nothing. So, of course, ninety-one people were killed and two and a half hundred were wounded, while three bombers in the morning and nine in the afternoon roamed over the city. Some twenty buildings were destroyed or damaged in one day.

Ihmiset varmaan joutuivat hysterian valtaan?

People would probably have come to hysteria? They did not. When the bombing was ceased, people stood just as quietly and calmly in conversation on the streets as before. The police had to force traders to leave the marketplace before the sale was suspended and the market was cleared.

Piste. Huonot uutiset ovat oletusasetus.

We Finns do not have any bigger steel nerves than the rest of us. But we have got used to bad news and we know how to deal with them. And feelings are not shown. Dot. Bad news is the default setting.

I've told about our commonly owned horse Exuberance, i.e. Esa, whose early years in Finland were something between the comic and the unimaginable. He did not agree to go training to the forest road, but jumped up to protest and changed direction on the narrow road. He tensed in the races and disgusted the pattering sand on his face. When the races went better, an abscess split the hoof. But what about that, pretty much standard. Bad news is the default setting.

Kunnes sitten rauhallinen käsittely ja hevosen ehdoilla tapahtuva valmennus Ravitalli Markus Dahlströmillä alkoi kantaa hedelmää: Ruotsista tullut Esu rupesi muuttumaan suomalaiseksi. Tunteita ei näytetä. Se hoidetaan, mikä eteen tulee. Ja loppujen lopuksi siitähän rupeaa nauttimaan.

Until then, the fruits of the peaceful handling and coaching at Trotting Stable Markus Dahlström began to emerge: Esu, born in Sweden, began to change into a Finn. The feelings are not showed. Whatever comes in front of you, it is handled. And after all,  you will enjoy it.

After the winter break Esu has learned to fly, now there is a four-victory pipe behind. The radio is often on in the stable. Perhaps Esu has listened to Stephen Hawking's words: "Look up to the stars, not down to your feet". Not even to the point where the crack has not yet fully grown out of the hoof.

Esu miettii, miten hyviä uutisia käsitellään. Esu ponders how good news should be handled.

How can I, a Finn, handle such good news? There is, then, learning for me. Do not expect a flash to hit again around the corner. Do not miss a single day, not even those good ones. If Esu learned, I guess I will learn, too.

Tästä voit katsoa Esun viimeisimmän lähdön, numero 7 Exuberance.

From here you can watch Esu's latest start, number 7 Exuberance.

There is nothing more inspiring depressing at spring time than cleaning the cupboards.

Miinuspuolelle kirjataan:
The following is recorded on the minus side:
  1. Ai että harmittaa aloittaa. OMG, it is annoying to start.
  2. Kevätauringon paistaminen romukasaan. The spring sunshine at the scrap pile.
When you take the goods out of the cupboard, they will not fit back again.
Pluspuolelle kirjataan:
The following is recorded on the plus side:
You will find unexpected and forgotten treasures. Like for instance a pair of candlesticks that has not been used. The reason is shown in the following illustration.

Hopea on kaapin perällä muuttunut pronssiksi. Aika kova arvonalennus. The silver at the bottom of the cabinet has turned into bronze. Quite a big loss in value.

Mutta ei hätää. Vuoraa astia alumiinifoliolla. Lisää kuumaa vettä ja pari ruokalusikallista merisuolaa ja ruokasoodaa. Kastele tummunut hopeaesine liuoksessa. But do not worry. Coat the container with aluminum foil. Add hot water and a couple of tablespoons of sea salt and baking soda. Wet the dark silver object in the solution.
Tadaa! Nyt voit taas haudata sen kaapin perälle. Tadaa! Now you can bury it again at the back of the cupboard.

Joko osaat valita lampun oikein? Can you already choose your light correctly?

Pohjoisella pallonpuoliskolla eletään nyt vuoden pimeintä aikaa.

It is now the darkest time of the year at the northern hemisphere. And believe me, it is dark. For 18 hours per day.

I do not know if it is because my eyes are not really getting any younger. Or that the past autumn has been really rainy. Probably both. But darkness has looked even darker than before.

Olen siis joutunut pohtimaan keinovalon laatua entistä tarkemmin. Sittemmin hehkulamppujen valmistus on lopetettu.

So I have had to reflect on the quality of artificial light more accurately. Today, there are also good opportunities. Before, the only thing you had to think of was how many watts you want to your light bulb or how many watts the stub of the bulb can tolerate. Since then, manufacturing light bulbs has been discontinued.

Of old lamps, there still are left fluorescent tubes that are large in size and therefore suitable for general lighting. But they contain hazardous waste, mercury, and they do not have a long service life.

There are halogen lamps that are also suitable for dimmable lamps and humid spaces such as a sauna. But few lamps have the appropriate stub.

Halogeenilamppu. Halogen lamp.

There are energy-saving lamps that do not heat up. They, however, switch on slowly and brighten up gradually.

Eikö sinne hiissata kaikki yli kaksivuotiaat sammuneet lamput uuden kuitilla? Ja tämä ei nyt ole ohje.

And then there are LED lamps that are my favorite. They have low consumption, that is, they are cheap to use. They light up immediately and tolerate denser switch on - switch off use. Previously, they were expensive to acquire, but now prices have fallen to a somewhat tolerable level. And you get a two-year warranty, too! All I'm just wondering is how the store proves that this is exactly the lamp mentioned in the receipt. Don't people carry all the more than two-year-old faded lamps there together with a new receipt? And this is not an advice.

I've finally learned to use the new measure lumen instead of the good old watt to measure the amount of light. The general rule is that about 710 lumens correspond to the overall 60 watts, which showed even something.

And then still the most difficult one, the color temperature of the lamp, kelvin. Such problems did not exist before. The bulb's light was homely yellow at 2700 kelvin. Always. But now: how many kelvins is enough for my interior design?

Sopiiko Yki Nummen Lokki-valaisimeen lämmin keltainen valo? 2700 kelviniä. Does warm yellow light match the Seagull lamp by Yki Nummi? 2700 kelvins

Mielestäni ei. Lokin muotokieli vaatii valkean valon. 6500 kelviniä. In my opinion no. The Seagull needs a white light. 6500 kelvins.

Now I have made a great discovery, and it is here.

Kevät keskelle pimeyttä. Spring in the middle of darkness.

Valo on todella luonnonvaloa. Ja mikä ihmeellisintä, lamppu ei häikäise.

I warmly recommend (poor comparison, warm is only up to 2700 kelvin) this lamp. When this one was changed to our windowless hallway and for the first time I came in, I thought spring had come. Light is really natural light. And what is even more astonishing, it doesn't blind even when you look straight at it.

Lähtölaskenta on alkanut / The countdown has begun

Tänä jouluna teen kaiken oikein ja ajoissa 😇. Sen varmistamiseksi minulla on tsekkilista.

This Christmas I will do everything right and timely 😇. To ensure this, I have a checklist.

Joulukortit 👍 tsek

Christmas cards 👍 check

Otan osoiterekisterin esille.

I open my address register. But on Facebook it has seemed a bit like one couple no longer shares the address. How do I know? I don't dare to ask, we are not so close. If I put both names on the card, is it melancholic if they have divorsed? I will send - I won't - I will???? Well no. I will claim that the post lost the card on the way.

Yksi uusikin on listalla. Mutta en muista hänen puolisonsa nimeä. Taas tämä puoliso-ongelma. Ja en-ilkeä-kysyä-ongelma. Tutkin Fonectasta, mutta ei löydy. Tietenkään. Ikinä siitä ei ole apua. Tutkin googlettamalla kuin salapoliisi, mutta ei onnistu. Kortti jää pöydälle odottamaan, että törmään johonkuhun, jolta voin kysyä.

One new one is on the list. But I do not remember his spouse's name. Again this spouse problem. And an I-don't-dare-to-ask problem. I searched at Fonecta, but did not find. Of course. I never find at Fonecta. I searche with Google like a detective without no luck. The card stays on the table waiting for me coming across with somebody from whom I can ask.

Ja minkälainen postimerkki Ruotsiin menevään korttiin piti laittaa - miksen minään vuonna muista?

And what kind of a stamp was needed for a card to Sweden - why can't I ever remember?

Lahjojen ostaminen aikuisille 👍 hmmm...

Purchasing gifts for adults 👍 hmmm...

Huokaan haikeasti.

Would it now have become the year that we don't buy gifts for adults any more? There are already so many grandchildren and the money is tight. But children are still children, even though they are adults. I am pained and I ask the children for opinion. Everyone thinks Christmas gifts are a child's thing. I sigh sadly.

Lahjojen ostaminen lapsille 👍 tsek

Purchasing gifts for children 👍 check

On muuten yllättävän vaikeaa saada pieniltä lapsilta vastausta mitä he ovat toivoneet joululahjaksi. Enkä millään tiedä, mitä kaikkea heillä jo on kotonaan. Mutta ei hätää. Sillä minulla on loistava suunnitelma. Olen käynyt Prismassa kuvaamassa leluja ja näyttänyt kuvat vanhemmille. Menen takaisin Prismaan, kun siellä on 15 %:n alennuspäivät.

It is, by the way, surprisingly difficult for a small child to answer what they have hoped for as a Christmas present. And I do not know every single thing they already have at home. But nothing to worry. Because I have a great plan. I have been to Prisma department store taking photos of toys and showed pictures to the parents. I will go back to Prisma again when there are 15% discount days.

And the second part of the plan is even more briljant: I have sent the chosen photos out of the million photos taken to myself to WhatsApp. I can not remember the presents wrong. I can not mistake. Complete plan.

Kunnes se alennuspäivä koittaa ja menen Prismaan. Eihän niitä valittuja leluja enää ole 😖. Miten ne ovat voineet loppua? Eikö täällä yhtään vahdita hyllytilannetta ja tehdä lisätilauksia?

Until the discount days come and I go to Prisma. The chosen toys are no longer there 😖. How can they have run out? Is not there anybody to watch the shelf situation and make additional orders?

Vilkuilen kuvia kännykästä ja yritän löytää valitut lelut hyllyistä. Mutta leluja on valtava määrä. Hyllyt painuvat lähemmäksi. Hiki virtaa. Silmissä sumenee.

I keep glancing the photos in my cell phone and I'm trying to find the chosen toys at the selves. But there are a huge number of toys. Shelves get sinking closer to me. Sweat flows. Everything blurs in my eyes.

Kunnes jostain tulee pelastava oivallus. Joku saamari on käännellyt legopaketit väärin päin. Takapuolelta löytyvät oikeat kuvat.

Until the rescuing idea comes from somewhere. Some flaming person has turned the lego packs backwards. On the other side there are the right pictures.

Tämä kuva minulla oli muistilappuna kännykässä. This photo I had in my phone.

Ja tämä oli Prisman hyllyssä. Näetkö: isoäiti-ihminen erehtyy tässä kohden hyvin helposti. And this one was on Prisma's self. See now? A granny person gets easily lost in this phase.

Joulusiivous 👎 no joo. Onhan tässä vielä aikaa.

Christmas cleaning 👎 yeah. There is still time left here.

Jouluruuat ja leipominen 👎 Kaikki voimat valuivat Prisman leluhyllyjen väliin.

Christmas food and baking 👎 All forces swept through Prisma's toy racks.

Itsenäisyys - miltä se tuntuu? / Independency - how does it feel?

Suomen itsenäisyyspäivä on ensi viikolla. Suomi täyttää 100 vuotta.

Finland's Independence Day is next week. Finland is 100 years old.

There is no one in Finland who can not appreciate it. The veterans are respected, and heroic soldiers' graves are visited at least on Independence Day. Immediately after watching the famous Finnish movie Unknown Soldier which we look every year.

He ovat kuuluneet toiseen maailmaan, olleet myyttisiä sankareita.

But as long as I have lived, veterans have seemed old, belonged to another generation. They have belonged to another world, they were mythical heroes. Honestly, I have not terribly much dared to think of war. It has been too horrifying, fortunately however distant. Even if still today, in the rest of the world, a huge number of people live in the middle of a war.

Sotia on käy aina. Tämä on Kindjal, kaukaasialainen kasakoiden tikari nuoruusvuosiltani 1809-1917. There have always been wars. This is a Kindjal, a Caucasian Cossack dagger from my youth 1809-1917.

Kunnes sitten aloimme ukin kanssa kirjoittaa sota-aikaan sijoittuvaa jännäriä. Viimeinkin sain rohkeutta tutustua historiaan rehellisesti. Ei sota tapahtunut jollekin muulle, jollekin vanhanaikaiselle ihmiselle, joka nykyihmiseen verrattuna pystyi kestämään aivan eeppisiä vastoinkäymisiä silmää räpäyttämättä.

Until this, when we together with grandpa started to write a war-time thriller. Finally, I got the courage to explore history honestly. The war did not happen to any other, old-fashioned man who, in comparison to today's human being, was able to withstand the very epic adversity without blaming the eye.

Ihmiset olivat tuntevia, eläviä, samanlaisia ihmisiä kuin minä. Tässä on lainaus suoraan sodan kokeneen suusta. Varoitus: tarina ei sovi herkille (jollainen minäkin olen). Tämänkaltaisten tarinoiden jälkeen viimeinkin alitajuntaa myöten ymmärrän mitä itsenäisyys merkitsee.

People were sentient, alive, just the same people as me. Here is a quotation directly from the mouth of a soldier. Warning: The story does not fit sensitive (as I am). After this kind of story, I finally understand to the subconscious what autonomy means.

Onni Palaste kertoo kirjassa Talvisodan ääniä sotilaasta, joka haavoittui jäällä liikuntakyvyttömäksi ja näytteli kuollutta vihollisen partion tullessa lähelle:

Onni Palaste tells the story of a soldier in his book Winter War Voices. The soldier was injured on the ice so that he could not move and pretended to be dead when the enemy patrol came near:

"Now I had to encounter the most horrible moments of my life. The red soldier grabbed his rifle, with a sharp stinger, and quickly poked it toward my throat. In spite of the shocking experience I tried to keep my body limp. The poke to my throat had broken my trachea. Another poke hit my mouth and hurt my palate so that my head went to the side and I believed the point of the tip was going out through my eye. To pretend a dead soldier was not easy to do."

This soldier eventually survived, and so did Finland. Thanks to every Finnish soldier! And also to those who carried the burden of mental tragedies inherited from the previous generation.

Hammaslääkärilasku hämmästyttää / Dentist's astonishing invoice

Ystäväni halusi mennä suuhygienistille puhdistuttamaan hampaat. Helppoa?

My friend wanted to go to the dental hygienist to clean the teeth. Easy?

It is not because the private side of the dental hygiene services are much more expensive without a dentist's referral. This is not the case in public healthcare. And now I take this opportunity to send my greetings to the Finnish officials planning the health care reform.

Kela-korvauksen verran me suomalaiset saamme "alennusta" laskusta. Mutta laskun lisäriveillä se peritään takaisin. Joten itse asiassa Kela eli yhteiskunta maksaa ne lisärivit.

So first to the dentist. The check went well, but the bill caused some hilarity. Or it would have caused if there was no money in question. Together, we adored how much creativity is now required of health care staff. They have to come up with several lines to the invoice to raise the total amount. We Finns get "reduction" from the invoice amounting the sum that the social insurance institution of Finland has us admitted. But with the additional rows of the invoice we pay it back. So, at the end the social insurance institution i.e. society pays those rows.

Would not it suffice if you simply told how much? No. There needs to be a differentiation so that even the simpler payer understands that he has caused a lot of expenses.

Kannan nyt korteni kekoon ja osallistun Suomen sote-palvelusetelitalkoisiin tarjoamalla muutaman uuden idean tulevaisuuden laskuerittelyihin. Seuraavissa vaihtoehdoissa aina yksi on jo olemassa oleva, muut pelkkiä ehdotuksia. Ilman näitä et pääse sisään lääkäriin. Tai ainakaan et pääse enää ulos.

Now I'm doing my bit and taking part in the health care reform in Finland by offering a few new ideas for future invoices. In the following alternatives, there is always one already existing in each part, the others mere suggestions. Without these you will not get in to the doctor. Or at least you can not get out.

Arvaatko mitkä ovat käytettyjä ideoita? Oikeat vastaukset blogin lopussa.

Can you guess what are the ideas used? The right answers at the end of the blog.

Kiitos siitä, että yleensä tulet paikalle:
Thank you for mere coming to the place:

a) sisääntulomaksu / entry fee
b) toimistomaksu / office fee
c) hissimaksu / elevator fee
d) narikkamaksu / cloakroom fee

Sinä aiheutat kuluja kun siinä penkillä makaat:
You cause expenses just by lying there on the bench:

a) laitemaksu / equipment fee
b) poranterän vaihtomaksu / twist drill's replacement fee
c) röntgenkuvamaksu / x-ray fee
d) tutkimustietojen arkistointimaksu / the filing fee for research data

Eikä rahojen periminenkään sinulta ilmaista ole:
Nor is it free to charge you:

a) laskun printtaamismaksu / invoice's printing fee
b) käteisen käsittelymaksu / fee for paying in cash
c) laskutuslisämaksu / billing fee
d) pankkikortin käyttömaksu / debit card fee

Oikeat vastaukset eli jo olemassa olevat lisärivit laskuissa: b) toimistomaksu, a) laitemaksu, c) laskutuslisämaksu. Muut saattavat löytyä laskulta, kun seuraavan kerran lääkäriin ilmestyt.

The right answers, i.e. the existing additional rows on invoices: b) office fee, a) equipment fee, c) billing fee. Others may be on the invoice when next time you appear to the doctor.

Tuulen lailla lennän ratsuni seläss(t)ä / Like a wind I will fly on (off) the back of my horse

- Ai kun kiva lähteä pitkästä aikaa ratsastamaan.
- It's nice to go for a ride after such a long time.

- Joo, millonkahan ollaan viimeksi käyty?
- Yeah, how long is it from the last ride?

- Muista sitten, ettet läväytä pohkeilla Heviä kylkiin. Se on tosi herkkä siitä.
- Remember then that you do not slam Hevi with your calves to her sides. She's really sensitive to it.

- Ai hitsi, unohtu hakea alakerran varastosta ne siun vanhat kannukset.
- Oh, sorry, forgot to pick up your old spurs from the downstairs stockroom.

- !!!!!!!

- The owner of the stall would look in the courtyard that viuhhh ... something familiar there was, but I did not have time to see it. And something red.

- Kävellään pelkästään, hevosilla ei oo kenkiä.
- We just walk, the horses don't have shoes.

- Mitä??? Täällähän on lunta.

- What??? There is snow all over.

- Ei paljas kavio ole lumihangessa liukas. Kesäkenkä on. Eikä mennä mihinkään auratulle. Niin kuin tielle.

- No bare hoof is slippery on the snow. The summer shoe is. And we do not go to any place that is ploughed. Like on the road.

- Myö liukastutaan ja jäähään hevosen alle.

- We will slip and end under the horse.

- No eikä jäähä.

- No we won't.

- Toivottavasti ne osaa siellä makkaratehtaan lihanleikkuupöydällä erotella...

- Hope they are able to separate on the sausage factory's meat cutter table ...

- !!!!!!

- Mennään tuonne metsään, mee sie edeltä.

- Let's go that way to the woods, you can go first.

- Ai että on ihana ilma, sielu lepää täällä metsän rauhassa.

- Oh, what a wonderful weather, the soul rests here in the forest.

- Mee eestä!!!! Heviä sattui jalkaan.

- Go out of the way!!!! Hevi hurt her leg.

- Täh? En mee eestä. Päinvastoin blokkaan tien, ettei se lähe viemään sinnuu. Mitä se riehuu? Ei oo yhtään Hevin tapaista.
- What? No I won't. On the contrary, I will block the road so she can't toss you around. What's the f... up? Not like Hevi at all to rave like that.

- Please, get out of the way!!! Or she will go over your pony and you will be hurt.

- Wait, try to stop her. She did not hurt her leg. There is an enormous stick gripped to her tail and it beats her hind legs. No wonder the poor Hevi was frightened.

- Tästä on vielä matkaa tallille...

- There is still a trip to go to the stable from here...

- Mie tuun alas ja yritän irrottaa karahkan. Miulla on poni, mie pääsen kyllä takaisin selkään. Ei se oo korkee.

- I will come down and try to detach the branch. I have a pony, I will be able to climb back. He's not tall.

- No yritä.

- Well okay, try then.

- Nyt se oksa lähti. Mutta oli kyllä iso. Mie nousen takaisin.

- Now that shit is gone. But it was big. I'll climb back.

- Miksi sie hypit yhdellä jalalla siinä ponin vieressä????

- Why are you jumping on one leg next to the pony????

- No kun se ei pysy yhtään paikallaan. En mie pysty ponnistamaan vauhdissa selkään!!!!

- Well, I have the other foot in the stirrup but he does not stay in place for one second. I can not make a swing to the back !!!!

- Ei näytä hyvältä. Aiot sie hyppiä koko matkan takaisin?

- It does not look good. Are you going to jump back all the way?

- Mie kävelen.

- I'll walk.

Mistä runot kertovat? What do poems tell us?

Onko ketään, kenen elämää runo ei olisi joskus koskettanut?

Is there anybody whose life a poem would never have touched?

Suomessakin runoja uskotaan olleen jo tuhansia vuosia ennen ajanlaskumme alkua. Mikä siis runoudessa viehättää?

In Finland, poems are believed to have been thousands of years before the start of our era. So what is it that we like in poetry?

The poem can be a secret that opens only if the reader can interpret it properly. It may be a love affair that one dares not to utter at a loud voice. The words of the songs are poems. Many people identify with them. Sometimes they touch and bring comfort: I'm not alone with my thoughts and feelings.

A poem can be a tribute if it is written as a praise. Poems are the way to sharing things. Many who can not read whole novels like poems. For example, sufferers of ADHD enjoy a lot of their journeys to the world of poetry.

But why did I now get excited about poetry? It was created by my talented friend Asta Siekkinen. Asta has written song lyrics and plays. Along with all this, Asta teaches communication. And now she has published a poem book in Mediapinta publishing house's Finland 100 poetry book project. I'm so proud of you, Asta!

Kirja alkaa Roosan ja Ruunon - kahden erilaisen elämästä. Välillä tulevat kyyneleet lukijan silmiin, sitten taas naurattaa.

The book begins with the lives of Roosa and Ruuno - two different people. At times tears come to the reader's eyes, then laugh again.

Then we move on to stories about a little girl's life. They are so life-tasting, I would guess that the writer has very exact knowledge of the little girl's feelings :) With one adult in one poem have I also been dealing with as a little girl. Now as an adult reading this poem had a somewhat therapeutic effect on disassembling of childhood traumas.

Kolmannessa osassa kirjailija iloittelee suomen kielellä ja huumorilla. "Sorsan moka" on suosikkini, hykerryttävän hauska.

In the third part, the author rejoices with Finnish language and humor. "Duck's Mistake" is my favorite, thrilling fun.

Neljännessä ja viimeisessä osassa "Svengin kutsu" on suurimmaksi osaksi sävellyksiin tai niiden inspiraatioksi syntyneitä sanoituksia.

The fourth and last part, the "Sveng's Invitation" consists largely of lyrics to compositions or lyrics inspired by them.

If you like poems, from this link you can order Roosa and Ruuno. Works well as a Christmas gift, but you probably will not give up on it. Unfortunately it is for the time being only in Finnish.

Miksi purevia hevosia arvostettiin? / Why were biting horses valued?

Teoksesta SUOMEN RAVIURHEILU, Lauri Rinta ja Esko Rinta, julkaistu näiden veljesten toimesta 1950-luvulla.

From the book FINNISH TROT RACING, Lauri Rinta and Esko Rinta, published by these brothers in the 1950's.

In the Middle Ages, says Strängnäs bishop Olaus Magnus or Magni: Finnish horses are good and for many reasons these horses are better and more durable, because they stay up to 3 years old with their mothers in the wooded meadows, even in the most severe winter days. In this way, they will become hardened, fast and inexhaustible. Magni also says: In battle, they bite the enemies.

Tänä vuonna vietetään suomenhevosen 110-vuotisjuhlaa, koska kantakirja perustettiin 110 vuotta sitten. Suomenhevosia on kuitenkin ollut paljon pitempään. Savonlinnalainen liikemies Kalle Hulkkonen (1898-1984) hevosineen kotipihallaan 1900-luvun alkupuolella. This year, the 110th anniversary of Finnish horses is celebrated because the pedigree was founded 110 years ago. However, Finnish horses have been much longer. Businessman in Savonlinna, Kalle Hulkkonen (1898-1984) with his horse in his home yard early in the 20th century.

Good horses were in Finland already in the Middle Ages, especially in Karelia. From there, large herds were transported to the countries of Novgorod, where warhorses were especially sought after. In the early 1300s, export of good horses to Russia and Estonia was prohibited as it was dangerous to take good warhorses from the country. The ban could not be properly monitored, so horses were transported over the Gulf of Finland by shipyards. Horses were also transported secretly via Kannas.

Kustaa Vaasan perustamat tammakartanot eli kuninkaankartanot lakkautettiin vuosisata ennen kuin Savon Prikaatin komentaja Yrjö Maunu Sprengtporten perusti 1775 jälkeen tammalan Haapaniemen kuninkaankartanoon Haukiveden rannalle. Hän perusti sinne myöhemmin Suomen ensimmäisen sotakoulun. Rakuunat saivat siellä järkiperäistä opetusta hevosen hoidossa.

The mare manors i.e. honors established by Gustav Vasa were abolished a century before the Commander of the Savo Brigade, Yrjö Maunu Sprengtporten, again founded in 1775 a mare manor to the Haapaniemi honor on the lakeside of Haukivesi. He later founded the first military school in Finland. There the raccoons got rational teaching in horse care.

Suomalaiset hevoset olivat hyvin haluttuja Ruotsinvallan aikana (päättyi Suomen Sodan loputtua syyskuussa 1809). Suomalainen ratsupalvelukseen lähtijä vei mukanaan vähintään kaksi hevosta, saattoipa talosta lähteä kuusikin hevosta palvelukseen. Kuningas Kustaa Vaasa kielsi viemästä maasta 8 markkaa kalliimpaa hevosta. Näin jäivät parhaat siitostammat maahan.

Finnish horses were very much sought after during the Reign of Sweden (ended after the end of the Finnish War in September 1809). The Finnish horseman going to service brought with him two or more horses, even six horses may go from one house to riding horse service. King Gustav Vasa forbade exporting a horse more expensive than 8 marks. This is how the best breeding mares were left in the country.

Kalle Hulkkonen drove in races, but he also made horse trading among other businesses. Markus Dahlström, grandson of his daughter, is today's horseman coach and trainer in Savonlinna.

This week, there will be no life advice, instead here is a folk poem of the birth of the horse recorded in Ilomantsi. Sorry to foreign readers: I am not able to translate this. But if you have poems of horses, I'd love to hear them.

Hiekassa hevosen synty
vuoresta valitun varsan
tuoll on pää kivestä pantu
sääri rauasta rakettu
Empä huua , vaik on huoli
Enkä itke, jos on ikävä
Annan huolia hevosen
murehtia mustan ruunan
määkiä mäen takasen
vuorehisen voivotella
hevosell on luu lujempi
luu lujempi, pää parempi
varavammat säärivarret
