Marjaana on mukana kanasirkuksessa, joka on kiertävä tieto- ja viihdetapahtuma. Sen tarkoitus on lisätä ymmärrystä maatiaiskanasta lajina, tuotantoeläimenä ja lemmikkinä. Kanasirkuksesta voit lukea lisää Kanasirkuksen blogista.

Marjaana is involved in a chicken circus, which is a circumforaneous information and entertainment event. Its purpose is to increase understanding of the landraced hen as a species, production animal and pet. Of chicken circus you can read more in the Chicken Circus blog. 

Herkkis on sirkuksessa esiintyvä taiteilija, ja edustaa suomalaisen maatiaiskanan kiuruvedenkantaa. Se on kutakuinkin täydellinen kana: kaunis, rauhallinen, terve ja hoitaa hommansa.

Herkkis is a performing artist in the circus, and represents the Finnish Landrace chicken from Kiuruvesi. It is more or less a perfect chicken: beautiful, quiet, healthy and gets the job done.

How did your paths cross with Herkkis?

Herkkis saapui minulle munana 1.7.2010 ja kuoriutui koneessa 21.7.2010. Koneessani on paikat vain seitsemälle munalle, joten konepoikaset saavat yksilöllisen kohtelun ja niitä käsitellään ensi hetkistä alkaen. Siitä juontuu myös Herkkiksen luottamus ihmiseen.

Herkkis came to me as an egg 1st July 2010 and hatched from the machine 21st July 2010. My machine has places for seven eggs only, so the machine chicks receive individual treatment and they are handled starting the first moments. From there also derives Herkkis's trust for humans.

Aluksi Herkkiksen nimi oli Pilkkuhartia. Myöhemmin höyhenys sai purkkiherkkusienen värin, mistä linnun nimi.

Initially Herkkis was called Pilkkuhartia (Spotted Shoulder). Later the plumage got canned mushroom color, and there comes the bird's name.
 
Herkkis on hautonut pienkanalassani vähintään yhden poikueen joka kesä. Emona se on tunnollinen ja hoitaa poikasia jopa kaksi kuukautta. Siinä vaiheessa poikuetta on jo sangen vaikea mahduttaa siipien alle nukkumaan, mutta sopu sijaa antaa. 

Herkkis has hatched at least one litter every summer in my small henhouse. As a mother it is conscientious and cares for chicks up to two months. At that point, litters have already been quite difficult to fit under the wings to sleep, but concord gives place.

Luottamus ihmiseen sekä terve ahneus on mahdollistanut erinäisten temppujen opettamisen Herkkikselle. Se osaa ainakin hypätä yläpystyä, antaa tassua ja ottaa tiukan katsekontaktin. 

Confidence in humans, as well as healthy greed has enabled teaching various tricks to Herkkis. It is at least able to jump straight up, give paw, and take a strict eye contact.

Viisivuotiaana Herkkis muutti uuteen kotiin, kun itse siirryimme Hirvensalmen syrjäkylältä taajamaolosuhteisiin Mikkelin Otavaan. Tämän elämänmuutoksen lisäksi Herkkiksellä alkoi ura sirkustaiteilijana.

When Herkkis was five years old it moved into a new home, when we moved ourselves from the remote Hirvensalmi village to urban conditions in Mikkeli, Otava. In addition to this change of life Herkkis began a career as a circus artist.

What has Herkkis given or taught you? 

Hautova ja poikasensa hyvin hoitava emokana on aarre. Herkkis on vuosien mittaan ollut hyvä muistutus siitä, että kun eläin saa varttua ja elää rauhallisissa ja asiallisissa oloissa, se palkitsee hoitajansa olemalla terve ja tuottavakin.

A mother-hen brooding and caring its young well is a treasure. Herkkis has been over the years a good reminder that when an animal may grow up and live in calm and reasonable conditions, it will reward caregivers by being healthy and productive.

Herkkikseltä ja sen lajitovereilta saamiini ahaa-elämyksiin kuuluu myös ymmärrys siitä, että kanalla, kuten muillakin kodeissamme ja tiloillamme elävillä eläimillä, on oma luonteensa ja yksilölliset piirteensä. Pidän todennäköisenä, että tuotantokanaloissakin asuvista miljoonista linnuista jokaisella on periaatteessa sama potentiaali oppimiseen ja vuorovaikutukseen.

The insights I have received from Herkkis and the others of her species also include understanding that hen like other animals living at our homes and farms, have their own character and unique characteristics. I like it probable that also the millions of birds living in production henhouses have basically the same potential for learning and interaction each of them.

What event has stayed in your mind along your history?

Kesäisin matkustamme usein mökkisaareen Saimaalle. Kanat ja muut eläimet ovat kulkeneet mukana lukuisia kertoja, mutta ennen kaikkea muistan sen kesän, kun jätimme muun kanaparven naapurin hoiviin mökkireissun ajaksi.

During the summer, we often travel to an island cottage on Lake Saimaa. Hens and other animals have traveled with us large number of times, but most of all I remember the summer when we left the rest of the hen flock in the care of a neighbor for the time of our trip.

Herkkiksellä oli kuitenkin vastakuoriutuneet poikaset alla, enkä halunnut jättää vauvaperhettä hoitajan vastuksiksi. Niinpä Herkkis majoitettiin tipuineen kissankoppaan ja lykättiin takakonttiin. 

However, Herkkis had newly hatched chicks, and I did not want to leave the baby family to give trouble to the caregiver. So Herkkis was accommodated with her chick's to a cat's basket and put to the trunk.

Koppa veneili mukanamme saareen ja nökötti mökin kuistilla. Sää oli sateinen, tuulinen ja viileä, ja koppa peiteltiin huovalla. Herkkis viihtyi tipujensa parissa eikä osoittanut minkäänlaista halua poistua kopastaan; poikasetkin olivat vielä niin alkutekijöissään, ettei ulkomaailma kiinnostanut niitä millään tavalla. 

The basket boated with us to the island and stood at the cottage porch. The weather was rainy, windy and cool, and the basket was veiled with a blanket. Herkkis was comfortable with her chicks and showed no desire to leave the basket; chicks were still so rudimentary that they were not interested in the outside world in any way.

Kerran päivässä nostin Herkkiksen kopasta ulos jaloittelemaan ja harjoittamaan aineenvaihduntaa, mutta jo parin minuutin päästä se vaati päästä kököttämään tipujensa luo. Kun kotiuduimme mökiltä muutaman päivän kuluttua, lintuperheemme palasi sujuvasti parveen, aloitti normaalin elämän ja laajensi päivä päivältä seikkailujaan kotipihan syreeniviidakossa. 

Once a day I lifted Herkkis from the basket out to stretch its legs and to exercise metabolism, but after a couple of minutes it insisted on getting back to loll with her chicken. When we got home from the cottage after a few days, the bird family returned smoothly to the flock, began a normal life, and expanded day by day their adventures in our garden's lilac jungle.
