Skoda Felician vuoden 1961 mallista tuli autojen Miss Eurooppa Länsi-Saksassa. Sama malli oli myös Montrealin maailmannäyttelyn 1967 kaunein auto.

Skoda Felicia's 1961 model was chosen cars' Miss Europe in West Germany. The same model was also the most beautiful car in Montreal's World Expo in 1967.

Auto oli vain seitsemän vuotta vanha, mutta epäkunnossa. Moottori oli takakontissa osina, mutta muuten auto oli kohtalaisessa kunnossa. Varas vieraili Olavin Auton takapihalla, ja vei mennessään harvinaisen kaksikaasuttimisen moottorin. Olavin Auto oli Veikko-isäni ja Oiva Kekin  omistama autoliike- ja korjaamo Savonlinnassa, jossa Timo työskenteli asentajana siihen aikaan. Neuvokas nuori mies otti Skoda Octaviastaan moottorin kaunottareensa. 

The car was only seven years old, but out of order. The engine was in parts in the trunk, but otherwise the car was in moderate condition. A thief visited the backyard of Olavin Auto (Olav's Car) and took a rare double-throttle engine. Olav's Car was a car and repair shop owned by my father Veikko and Oiva Kekki in Savonlinna, where Timo worked as an installer at that time. A neat young man took the engine from his Skoda Octavia to his beauty. 

Auto piti vaihtaa perheystävällisempään malliin perheen kasvaessa. Esikoispoikamme ja minut Timo haki vielä Skoda Feliciallaan kotiin synnytyslaitokselta. Appiukko Veikko Putkonen oli varannut Olavin Autosta tyylikkään auton tähän tarkoitukseen, mutta eihän se vetänyt vertoja Skoda Feliciallemme!

The car had to be changed into a more family-friendly model as the family growed. Our firstbone son and me Timo still picked up from the maternity ward with his Skoda Felicia. The father-in-law Veikko Putkonen had booked an elegant car from Olavin Auto for this purpose, but it could not be compared with Skoda Felicia!

Vuonna 1996 Vuolijoelta löytyi samanlainen Skoda Felicia Roadster Super mallia 1961. Auto oli huonokuntoinen. Timo hilasi romun talliin ja purki sen osiin. Hän irrotti auton korin ja peitteli sen pressun alle pukkien päälle takapihalle.

In 1996 a similar Skoda Felicia Roadster Super model 1961 was found in Vuolijoki. The car was in poor condition. Timo hauled the scrap in the garage and disassembled it. He removed the car's coachwork and covered it on sawhorses in the back yard.

Sen jälkeen alkoi tekniikan osien kunnostus. Timo ei oikonut missään vaiheessa kunnostustyötä. Osat jotka eivät näy, ovat yhtä huolella kunnostettu kuin ne jotka näkyvät. Kunnostusurakka vei viisi vuotta. Skoda museotarkastettiin syyskuussa 2001.

After that, the renovation of the technical parts started. Timo did not straighten any phase of the restoration work. Parts that do not show up are as well restored as those that appear. The renovation project took five years. The Skoda was museum audited in September 2001.

All steps are done carefully and without saving effort.

Perheemme aarre on edelleen kotitallissaan. Auton kovakatto on käyttövalmiina telineillä tallin katossa. Ajoon Skoda pääsee vain kauniilla säällä!

The family's treasure is still in our home garage. The car's hard roof is ready for use on holders under the ceiling. For a drive Skoda can get off only in beautiful weather! 

Tämä Timo Dahlströmin kuuluisasta vuosimallista entisöimä Skoda Felicia Roadster Super oli Puruveden ympäriajon 2016 kaunein auto. This Skoda Felicia Roadster Super, which was restored by Timo Dahlström from the famous model, was the most beautiful car in 2017 in the race around Puruvesi.

Kaunokirjallisuuden myynti on Suomessa pitkästä aikaa hienoisessa nousussa. Mutta: lastenkirjojen myynti laskussa.

Sales of fiction literature is finally in a slight increase in Finland. But: sales of children's books is going down.

Miksi lastenkirjat eivät käy kaupaksi? Miksi esimerkiksi Gummerus lopetti kokonaan lastenkirjojen kustantamisen?

Why do not children's books sell? Why, for example, did the publisher Gummerus completely stop publishing children's books?

Sinäkin luet tätä netistä. Onko lukeminen siirtynyt sinne? Minä en tiedä, siksi kysyn tätä ihan vakavissani. Toivottavasti ei kuitenkaan ole niin, että lasten lukeminen on siirtynyt pelkäksi elävän kuvan katselemiseksi. You also read this on the net. Has reading gone there? I do not know, so I ask this very seriously. Hopefully, however, it is not the case that children's reading has simply moved to looking at a live image. Hand up one who has never indulged to strike a tablet or mobile with a children's program in front of a child reluctant to eat. My hand doesn't rise.

Aikoinani luin lapselle ääneen koko kirjaston lastenosaston. Mitä siitä seurasi? Lapsesta tuli aikuisena säkenöivän hyvä kirjailija. Lukeminen loppui siihen paikkaan, kun lukutaidon kehityttyä olisi pitänyt itse alkaa lukemaan. Hieno ihminen hänestä tuli, ja loistava puhuja.

In my time, I read to my child aloud the whole children's department of our home town's library. What did follow? The child became a sparkling good author. Reading stopped at a place where he learned to read and should have started reading himself. A great man came from him, however, and a brilliant speaker.

Miksi lapsille lukeminen kuitenkin on tärkeää? Ensinnäkin se on kiinteää vuorovaikutusta, teidän yhteinen hetkenne. Lukiessa kumpi vain voi pysäyttää prosessin ja kysyä toisen mielipidettä. Live-kuvaa katsoessa keskeytykset ovat yleensä ärsyttäviä ja vuorovaikutusta syntyy vain lapsen ja koneen välille.

Why is reading for children important, though? First, it is a solid interaction, your common moment. Whichever way you can stop the process and ask for the other's opinion. When watching live pictures, interruptions are generally annoying and interaction is only between child and machine.

Yhdeksänkymmentäluvun alussa teimme ukin kanssa lastenkirjan, joka ei ollut tarkoitettu luettavaksi, vaan elettäväksi. Se oli pienten lasten dekkari, jossa lapsi sai seurata johtolankoja ja yrittää arvata syyllisen.

At the beginning of the nineties, we together with grandpa made a children's book, which was not intended to be read but to live. It was a detective story for young children, where the child was able to follow the clues and try to guess the guilty one.

Teksti kertoi kuvan tapahtumista, mutta kuvituksessa tapahtui paljon muutakin. Pienet hiiret, joita ei tekstissä mainittu lainkaan, elivät kuvissa omaa elämäänsä. Yleensä väänsivät niin paljon jäynää kuin ehtivät.

The text told the story of the picture, but much more was done in the illustration. Small mice, which were not mentioned in the text, lived their own lives in pictures. In general, they twisted as much annoyance as they ever could. 

Mutta asiaan: miksi lapselle pitäisi lukea? Äidinkieli ja oppimisvalmiudet kehittyvät. Lapsen keskittymiskyky paranee ja hänestä tulee hyvä kuuntelija. Hän oppii myös keskustelua eli hienommin sanottuna viestintää. Nämä kaikki auttavat koulumenestyksessä ja ehkäisevät syrjäytymistä.

But to the question: Why should the child be read? Mother tongue and learning abilities are developing while reading. The child's ability to concentrate improves and he becomes a good listener. He also learns conversation, or rather, communication in a more fine word. All of these help in school success and prevent social exclusion.

Sähköisiä viestimiä ja lapsen suhdetta niihin ei kuitenkaan sovi unohtaa. Jokainen kai toivoo lapsestaan hyvää tietotekniikan ja jopa koodauksen osaajaa. Mielestäni aivan mainio satukanava on Instagramissa oleva "Leijona ja kettu", jossa nämä hykerryttävät hahmot seikkailevat hauskoissa tilanteissa.

However, electronic media and the relationship of a child with them should not be forgotten. Everyone hopes that his child will own good information technology and even coding expertise. In my opinion, a very good fairy tail channel is the "Lion and Fox" in Instagram, where these thrilling characters are adventurous in fun situations. 

Leijona, tämä on jättiläissieni, sanoo Kettu. Leijona vastaa: Tämä on isohöperö, vai oliko se sittenkin hapero... hmm Lion, this is a giant mushroom, says Fox. Lion answers: This is a giggle, or wait a minute, was it a brittle...

Tyhjennetään Suomi / Let's empty Finland

Ruotsalaisen ekonomistin ja yritysgurun Kjell Nordströmin mielestä koko maata ei kannata pitää asuttuna. Kasvukeskuksiin tiivistäminen tuo talouskasvua, kuten Nordström tässä Ylen uutisessa kertoo.

According to the Swedish economist and corporate guru Kjell Nordström, it is not worth living in the country as a whole. People's centering in growth centers will bring economic growth, as Nordström says in this YLE news.

Talouskasvu luo työpaikkoja ja pitää yritykset kilpailukykyisinä. Sillä enää ei voi käsitellä asioita maan rajojen sisällä. Kasvusta on huolehdittava siinä mittakaavassa, että kilpailijana on koko muu maailma.

Economic growth creates jobs and keeps businesses competitive. Because no longer can we handle matters within the borders of the country. Growth must be taken on the scale of competing with the rest of the world.

Entä jos sitten tehdään niin kuin ekonomistit haluavat: keskitetään asutus Helsinkiin, Tampereelle, Turkuun, Ouluun, Lahteen, Jyväskylään, Kuopioon, Seinäjoelle, Vaasaan ja Hämeenlinnaan. Ihmiset muuttavat sinne jo nyt vapaaehtoisesti. Ja ne jäärät, jotka vielä viihtyvät pikkukaupungeissa ja maaseudulla siirretään valtion käskystä väkisin kuten Stalinin aikaan Venäjällä.

What if it would be done as economists want: let's concentrate settlements in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Lahti, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Seinäjoki, Vaasa and Hämeenlinna. People are already volunteering there. And those hellbents who still thrive in small towns and rural areas are forced to move by government orders, such as at Stalin's time in Russia.

Nyt kaikki elävät onnellisina (?) kymmenessä valtavassa kaupungissa. Maaseudulla ei elä ketään, paitsi kourallinen maanviljelijöitä. He yrittävät ensin pitää suomalaiset ruuassa, mutta heidän lapsilleen ei ole päiväkoteja eikä kouluja. Joten lopulta hekin muuttavat lähimpään näistä kymmenestä kaupungista.

Now everyone lives happy (?) in ten huge cities. There is no one in the countryside except a handful of farmers. They try to keep the Finns in the food, but their children have no kindergartens or schools. So eventually the farmers will move to the nearest of these ten cities, too.

Kasvukeskusten asukkaat elävät kymmenen neliön asunnoissaan, koska enempää tilaa heille ei yksinkertaisesti ole. Tonttimaa ja rakentaminen on kallista, mutta juuri siihenhän pyrittiinkin. Talouden, tässä tapauksessa rakennusliikkeiden talouden kasvuun.

The inhabitants of the growth centers live in their ten square-dwelling homes because there is no more space for them. Land plot and construction is expensive, but that's exactly what was wanted. I.e. growth of economy, in this case the growth of the construction business.

Ilma kasvukeskuksissa alkaa olla aika saastunutta, vaikka monet yrittävätkin ajaa pyörällä töihin. Mutta muutaman kymmenen kilometrin työmatka käy lopulta parempikuntoisenkin ympäristönsuojelijan pohkeisiin.

The air in the growth centers begins to be rather contaminated, even though many try to ride by bike to their working place. But a couple of ten miles' journey to work will ultimately feel in the calves of even a better fit environmentalist.

Lomalle lähdetään maalle eli sinne, missä kasvukeskussukupolven vanhemmat vielä nuoruudessaan elivät. Mutta siellä ei ole kauppoja eikä muitakaan palveluita, joten pitkään siellä ei voi viipyä. Sen aikaa vain, minkä eväät ja auton bensatankin sisällys riittävät. Lapsille kerrotaan iltasatuna tarinoita sellaisesta vanhasta ja hassusta asiasta kuin turismista Suomessa. Muutama muukin elinkeino, kuten hevostalous ja raviurheilu ovat kuolleet. Niistä on kuitenkin elossa mukavia tarinoita jälkipolville kerrottaviksi.

On holiday people go to the countryside, where the parents of the growth center generation still lived in their youth. But there are no shops or other services, so for a long time you can not be staying there. Only for the time that your lunches and the contents of your car's gas tank are enough. In the evening, children are told stories of such an old and frustrating thing as tourism in Finland. A few other livelihoods, such as horse farms and horse racing, have died, too. However, there are still nice stories for posterity to be told.

Sitten yhtenä päivänä sattuu todella ikävä asia: terroristit iskevät yhteen kasvukeskuksista. Melkein kymmenesosa suomalaisista menehtyy. Se kävi vähän liian helposti, mutta toisaalta he asuivat niin tiiviisti lähekkäin. Onhan kuitenkin vielä yhdeksän kasvukeskusta.

Then one day a most unfortunate thing happens: terrorists hit one of the growth centers. Almost a tenth of Finns die. It went a bit too easily, but on the other hand they lived so close to each other. However, there are still nine growth centers left.

Mutta toisaalta: Ekonomistien mielestä ei ole kannattavaa asuttaa enää ihmisiä Suomessa. Sillä naapurimaiden Ruotsin, Norjan ja Venäjän puolella on paljon suurempia kasvukeskuksia. Talous kasvaa nopeammin, jos suomalaiset siirretään sinne.

But on the other hand: Economists think that it is no longer viable to inhabit people in Finland. Because there are much larger growth centers in neighboring Sweden, Norway and Russia. The economy will grow faster if Finns are moved there.

Mitä Esalle kuuluu? What's up, Esa?

Viime vuoden joulukuussa kerroin siitä, kuinka perheestämme tuli ravurin osaomistaja ja kuinka Esa-hevonen sai nimensä.

In December last year, I told about how our family became a part owner of a trotter and how Esa the horse got his name. 

Ja siitä, miten Esan eli Exuberancen ura Suomessa alkoi. Kenelläkään meistä ei todellakaan ollut tylsää.

And about how Esa's i.e. Exuberance's career began in Finland. None of us really was bored.

Tiimimme ammattilaiset valitsivat Exuberancen meille kilpahevoseksi. Vaihtoehtoja olisi ollut matkan varrella useita, mutta lopulta tämä hevonen valikoitui pitkän etsinnän päätteeksi. E. ei koskaan voittanut, mutta tuli aina loppuun asti. Joten kyllä siinä jotain hyvääkin täytyi olla.

Our team's professionals chose Exuberance for our racing horse. There would have been many choices, but finally this horse was chosen after a long search. E. never won, but always run up to the finish line. So yes, there had to be something good in him.

Pian selvisi, että Esa ei todellakaan jätä kavereita, ei raveissa eikä muutenkaan. Suuresta laumasta Ruotsista tuli pahasti läheisriippuvainen hevonen, joka jännitti melkein kaikkea. Sitä ei voinut edes käytävällä harjata, ellei ottanut toista hevosta kaveriksi.

It soon became clear that Esa really did not leave friends, not in races or at all. From a large herd in Sweden became a horse who was closely dependent of other horses, and tensed almost everything. He could not even be brushed in the corridor without taking another horse to accompany him there.

Alkoi totuttelu Ravitalli Markus Dahlströmin tavoille: yksilöllinen, rauhallinen, säännöllinen hoito ja ulkoilu omassa tarhassa. Esa alkoi rentoutua ja rauhoittua. Itseluottamus kasvoi. Se huomasi, että pärjää kyllä itsenäisestikin. Syntyi kesy-Esu, rauhallinen kaveri, joka rakasti lapsia, porkkanoita ja rutiineja.

He had to start getting used to the Racing Stable Markus Dahlström's habits: personal, calm, regular care and outdoor activities in his own fencing. Esa began to relax and calm down. Self-confidence grew. He noticed that he is able to cope independently. Then was born a tame Esa, a quiet guy who loved children, carrots and routines. 

Meillä kaikki viisi lapsenlasta saavat pitää Esua omana hevosenaan. Tämänkin herran käsistä lelut tippuvat siihen paikkaan ja pienet jalat töpöttelevät television ääreen kun hän kuulee, että Esan lähtö on alkamassa. All our five grandchildren may consider Esa as their own horse. Also this young gentleman drops the toys at once and small feet scurry in front of the television when he hears that Esa's start is beginning.

Rutiinit ovatkin Esalle tärkeitä. Jos harjoitusradan reunalla suolapussit ovat eri paikassa, Esan maailma nyrjähtää sijoiltaan. Tai jos mäski on väliaikaisesti lopussa, eikä sitä tarjoilla iltaruuan kanssa, se on Esalle iso pala. Mäskissä ei pahemmin ole ravintoaineita, mutta se maistuu suussa hyvälle. Ja KUULUU iltaruokaan.

And routines are important to Esa, really. If, beside the training track, the salt bags are in a different place, Esa's world will get scared and off the trails. Or if mash has temporarily run out and is not served with evening meal, it is a big deal for Esa. There aren't many nutrients in mash, but it tastes good in the mouth. And BELONGS to the supper.

Vuosi sitten kesällä Esa sai mahtavaa ahaa-elämyksen. Tiedäthän, sellaisen kun omena tippuu puusta päähän ja keksit painovoiman. Savonlinnan raveissa Esa hengasi joukon mukana ja sillä oli kivaa. Mutta kuski sanoi, että mennäänpä ohi. Silloin se tapahtui: Esa hoksasi, että raveissa kuuluu juosta toisista ohi. Ja että se tuntuu hyvältä. Jopa mahtavalta.

A year ago in the summer, Esa had an amazing idea. You know, when an apple drifts from tree to your head and you invent the gravity. In the races of Savonlinna, Esa was busy with the crowd and enjoyed it. But the driver said that he should bypass the other horses. Then it happened: Esa figured out that in the races you have to run past others. And that it feels good. Even great.

Siitä alkoi nousukausi, jossa vuorottelivat yhä paranevat startit ja vastoinkäymisten pirstoma kausi. Ensin tuli kaviopaise, joka halkaisi kavion. Kun taas päästiin vauhtiin, tuli imusuonentulehdus. Vastoinkäymisistä huolimatta kahdeksasta startista viisi on päättynyt voittoon, mikä on kyllä loistosuoritus. Kolmen peräkkäisen voiton putki alkoi jälleen kotiraveista.

It started a boom that alternated with the ever-improving starts and the hardships. First there was an abscess that split the hoof. When that had cured, then came a lymphadenitis. Despite of the difficulties five starts from eight in total have brought the first price, which is a tour de force. The tube of three wins began again from the home races.

Joka tapauksessa kesy-Esu oli mennyttä. E. on edelleen kiltti ja kultainen, mutta tietää itsekin olevansa aika voimakas juoksija. Jos treenistä on pari päivää aikaa, alkaa "elämänilo" pursuta yli (Exuberance = suomeksi elämänilo). Kunnioitan suuresti Markus Dahlströmiä, joka kerta toisensa jälkeen istuu Esan kärreille. En tiedä paljonko minulle pitäisi maksaa, että menisin sen dynamiittipötkön taakse istumaan. Ainakaan tonni ei riittäisi, vaikka rahaa tarvitsenkin.

In any case, the tame Esu was gone. E. is still kind and golden but knows he is a pretty strong runner. If a couple of days have gone from the last training, "exuberance" begins to overcome. I greatly respect Markus Dahlström, who again and again sits on Esa's cart. I do not know how much I ought to be paid for sitting behind that dynamite bar. At least a ton would not be enough, even though I need money. 

Nyt odotamme Jokimaa tekee tähtiä -kisan karsintoja. Se on Esukan tämän syksy päätähtäin, vaikka Suomen päärata Vermo onkin jo tullut valloitettua keskiviikkoraveissa pariin otteeseen. Linkki lähtöön Hippoksen kautta tässä, Esa kilpailee siinä numerolla 9. Kävi miten kävi, toivon vain kahta asiaa: Että Esa saa mennä sinne terveenä. Ja että mitellään voimia reilusti hevonen hevosta vastaan. Monesti Esa on antanut kavereille tasoitusta lähtölaukalla tai huonolla lähtöpaikalla. Tai jos ei muuta, niin kenkä on irronnut kesken lähdön. Sillehän ei mitään voi, kuuluu lajiin. Mutta olisi niin hienoa nähdä reilu mittelö.

Now we are waiting for the "Jokimaa makes stars" preliminary race. It is Esa's autumn's main goal, even though the Finnish prime racing course Vermo has already been conquered on two Wednesdays. Link to the race through Hippos here, Esa's number there is 9. However it goes, I just hope for two things: That Esa may go there healthy. And that the race is a fair conquest horse against horse. Often Esa has given the others handicap by galloping at the start or by a poor starting number. Or if not anything else, then the shoe has detached during the race. There is nothing with that, it belongs to the character of the races. But it would be so great to see a fair bout.
