Why don't you try something new: go to the heat races in the evening! Past experience is not required. Kids you can take with you because heat races are a family event.

What do heat races even mean?

Se on vapaa tapahtuma, jonne ravivalmentajat ja -kuskit tuovat ajokkejaan "hiittaamaan" eli ajamaan nopeaa vauhtia kilpailunomaisesti. Se on nuorille hevosille hyvää totuttelua oikeisiin raveihin. Ympärillä on muita hevosia ja ihmisvilinää. Kokeneemmat hevoset viimeistelevät startteihin.

It is a free event, where trainers and drivers bring their horses to "heat", i.e. to drive at fast pace competitively. It is good for young horses when getting used to the real races. There are other horses and humans bustling around. More experienced horses finalize to their future starts.

Hiittiravit saavat koko ajan uusia ystäviä. Heat races receive new friends all the time.

Toiset odottelevat pilttuissaan, kun toiset ovat radalla. Others are waiting in their boxes meanwhile others are on the track.

Joko tuli tarpeeksi askelia ja raitista ulkoilmaa? Pieni iltapala kanttiinissa antaa voimia. Enough steps and fresh air already? A small supper in canteen gives you energy.

Savonlinnassa hiittiravit järjestää Itä-Savon Hevosystäväinseura maanantaina 4.9. klo 18.00, maanantaina 18.9. klo 18.00 ja sunnuntaina 8.10. klo 12.00. Tsekkaa Facebookista toisten paikkakuntien hevosystäväinseurat.

In Savonlinna heat races are organised by the local horse friends' society on Monday 4 September at 6 p.m., Monday 18 September at 6 p.m. and Sunday 8 October at 12 o'clock. At Facebook you can find other places' horse friends' societies.

Arvoituksellinen Nissan Micra / The enigmatic Nissan Micra

Oli aika katsastaa äitini Nissan Micra. 1980-luvulla syntynyt oiva kulkupeli.

It was time to take my mother's Nissan Micra to the annual vehicle inspection. This great car of the 1980s. 

Micralla on ajettu vain reilut 60 000 kilometriä, ja katsastusmies antoi iloissaan todistuksen. Ei mitään vikaa autossa.

Just over 60,000 kilometers have been driven by Micra, and the inspector gave a certificate with joy. There is nothing wrong with the car.

Katsoin katsastuskonttorin pihassa niin kauan, että näin äitini pääsevän liikennevaloista eteen päin. Hyvin kulkee, lähdin kotiin päin.

I looked at the yard of the inspection office for so long that I saw my mother got off the traffic lights. Well going, I went home. 

Kun pääsin sinne, äiti soittaa. Micra pysähtyi heti liikennevalojen jälkeen ylämäkeen, eikä liiku enää senttiäkään. Jos olet joskus joutunut tähän tilanteeseen jonossa, tiedät tunteen.

When I got there, Mom calls. Micra stopped immediately after the traffic lights uphill and did not move any more. If you have ever been in this kind of situation in a queue, you know the feeling.

Mutta ei hätää, moottoripyörällä liikkuva herrasmies oli kuulemma pysähtynyt auttamaan häntä. Lähdin paikan päälle katsomaan.

But no problem, a motorcycle gentleman had stopped to help her. I went there on the spot.

Pysähtyneen Micran aiheuttamasta pitkästä jonosta auttamaan oli pysähtynyt vain yksi.

From the long queue caused by the halted Micra had only one person stopped.

Mutta hän olikin enkeli. Mies, joka pysähtyy aina avuntarvitsijan kohdalla, vaikka kaikki muut ajavat ohi.

But it soon became clear that he was an angel. A man who always stops at someone needing help, even though all the others are driving past.

Paitsi että yritti korjata auton, hän huolehti koko ajan ihmisten hyvinvoinnista. Avasi auton oven äidille. Huolehti, että hänellä on sateenvarjo yllään. Kertoi niin hauskoja juttuja, että murheellinen Micra-tarina alkoi tuntua aika pikku jutulta. Ja lopuksi työnsi  Micran läheiselle korjaamolle.

Not only did he try to repair the car, he also took care of the well-being of people. He opened the car door to my mother. Made sure she has an umbrella wearing. He told so funny stories that the sad story of Micra started to look like a very small thing. And finally he pushed Micra to the garage nearby.



Seuraavana aamuna autonkorjaaja ryhtyi tutkimaan Nissan Micraa. Hän sanoi ihan samat sanat kuin katsastusmieskin: loistopeli, ei mitään vikaa. Oikeasti: siitä ei löytynyt mitään korjattavaa. Enkelikö taas oli asialla?

Next morning the car repairer started exploring the Nissan Micra. He said exactly the same words as the inspector: a brilliant car, nothing to repair: Really: there was nothing wrong with the car. Was the angel there again?

Tieteellinen koe, osa 2 / Scientific experiment, part 2

Aiemmassa blogissa kerroin tieteellisestä lapsikokeesta: miten vaateshoppailu onnistuu 2-vuotiaan ehdoilla?

In a previous blog I told about a scientific experiment with a child: how does cloths shopping succeed with the terms of a 2-year old?

Mutta edellinen suloinen koekaniini oli tyttö. Entä jos seuraava on poika? Miten nuorena miehet alkavat vastustamaan vaateshoppailua?

But the previous cute guinea pig was a girl. What if the next guinea pig is a boy? At how early age do men start resisting cloth shopping?

Tieteellisen kokeen tulos: viimeistään 4-vuotiaana.

Result of the scientific experiment: at age of 4, at the latest.

Että vaatekauppaan. Well, well, to the clothing store it is.

Säännöt: 1. en sovita, 2. en kanna kassia kaupasta ulos. Rules: 1. I don't fit anything, 2. I don't carry the bag out of the shop.

Ohhoh mitä ajanhukkaa. Mutta nyt päästiin asiaan. Oh boy what a waist of time it was. But now back to business.
