Salama (Namusillan Harry Potter), käyttölinjainen cockerspanieli, on syntynyt huhtikuussa 2014 ja täyttää siis 3 vuotta. Olen naimisiin mennessäni tehnyt sopimuksen mieheni kanssa, että meidän perheessä tulee olemaan aina koira.
Salama (Harry Potter of Namusilta), working line Cocker Spaniel, was born in April 2014 and is thus 3 years old. When I got married I promised to my husband that there will always be a dog in our family.

How many dogs have you had in your family?
Ensimmäisen koiramme, tiibetinspanieli Edun hankimme sopimuksen vuoksi heti kun muutimme yhteiseen kotiin. Edun kanssa saimme viettää 13 vuotta.
Due to the promise the first dog, Tibetan Spaniel Edu, we acquired as soon as we moved to our common home. With Edu we had 13 good years.
Pienen mietiskelyn jälkeen mieheni Seppo toi työpäivän tuliaisina meille novascotiannoutajan pennun Remun. Remu ilahdutti meidän elämää 14 vuotta. Sitten päätimme, että nyt ei meille tule vähään aikaan koiraa. Oli niin mukavaa kun ei tarvinnut joka toinen päivä imuroida koirankarvoja.
After a little contemplation my husband Seppo brought us as a souvenir after one working day a Nova Scotia Retriever puppy Remu. Remu delighted our life for 14 years. Then we decided that now we will not have a dog for a while. It was so nice when you did not have to vacuum dog hairs every second day.
Mutta jotenkin se taas salakavalasti hiipi, nimittäin koirakuume. Illat vietimme netissä etsien sopivaa rotua ja niin meille tuli taas koira. Eli Salama on meidän kolmas koiramme.
But somehow it again crept insidiously, namely dog fever. The evenings we spent in seeking a suitable breed in internet and so we had a dog again. That is, Salama is our third dog.

How did your paths cross with Salama?
Olen aina pitänyt kovasti cockerspanielin ulkonäöstä ja siksi ensimmäisenä googletin tätä rotua. Kuvahaku näytti ihan oudon näköisiä cockereita ja luulinkin googlen erehtyneen. Kunnes ihastuin yhteen kuvaan niin, että päätin tutustua siihen tarkemmin. Kuva veikin minut Kuusiviidan cockereiden sivuille ja tutustuin ensimmäistä kertaa käyttölinjaiseen cockerspanieliin. Siis koira, joka täytti kaikki meidän toiveet, ihastuin samantien.
I have always liked very much the appearance of a Cocker Spaniel and therefore I first googled this race. Images looked pretty odd for Cockers and I thought Google was mistaken. Until I fell in love with one picture, so that I decided to explore it further. Image exported me to Kuusiviita's Cocker sides and I met Working Cocker Spaniel for the first time. That was a dog that met all of our desires, I fell in love right away.
Otimme heti yhteyttä Kuusiviitaan ja saimmekin kuulla että pentuja oli juuri tulossa. Sovimme myös Jukka Paroisen kanssa että saisimme käydä tutustumassa hänen koiriinsa. Ihastus tähän rotuun vain syveni, kun näimme nämä hurmaavat koiraneidit Jukan luona. Olimme niin innoissamme. Sovimme Jukan kanssa, että otamme pentueesta urospennun. Harmiksemme odotus päättyi pettymykseen, kun Jukan pentueeseen syntyi vain yksi urospentu, joka olikin jo varattu aikaisemmin.
We immediately contacted Kuusiviita and we heard that puppies were just coming. We also agreed with Jukka Paroinen that we would visit and make acquaintance with his dogs. Fancy to this race only deepened when we saw these adorable lady dogs at Jukka's house. We were so excited. We agreed with Jukka that we take a male puppy from the litter. Annoying enough, wait ended in disappointment when only one male puppy was born to the litter. And he had already been booked earlier.
Eli taas googlen kimppuun, sillä olin päättänyt että tämä on meidän rotu. Google vei minut Namusillan Grundogsin sivuille ja mikä hienointa siellä luki että pentuja olisi tulossa. Tiesin siis jo tässä vaiheessa, että näillä pennuilla on kysyntää ja olin taas valmistautunut pettymään. Kirjoitin sähköpostin Namusiltaan Anu Knuutiselle ja sain häneltä vastauksen, että hän odottaa ensin pentujen syntymisen ja vasta sitten päättää kuka pennun saa. Valmistauduin mielessäni taas pettymään ja jopa luopumaan toivosta.
So, once more I turned to Google, because I had decided that this is our race. Google took me to the pages of Namusillan Grundogs and what was best, they said there that puppies would be coming. So I already knew at this point that these puppies are in demand again, and I was prepared to be disappointed. I wrote an e-mail to Namusilta's Anu Knuutinen and she answered that she first waits the puppies to be born and only then decides who gets a puppy. I prepared my mind again to disappointment and even to give up hope.
Tuli pääsiäinen ja olin lomalla. Maanantaiaamuna oli taas niin vaikeaa lähteä töihin loman jälkeen. Töissä avasin puhelimen ja se piippasi heti tekstiviestin merkiksi. Ja voi sitä riemua. Anu laittoi viestin; teille olisi varattu musta urospentu, valkoisin merkein, oletteko vielä kiinnostuneita?
Easter came and I was on vacation. Monday morning was again so hard to go to work after the holidays. At work, I opened my phone and it beeped immediately for a text message. And how fun was that. Anu sending the message; a black male puppy with white markings has been reserved for you, are you still interested?
OLEMME!!! ja samalla soitto miehelle, me saadaan pentu! Ja niin alkoi iloinen odotus. Salama on syntynyt Kajaanissa ja asusti ensimmäiset viikot Tervosen Elinan ja hänen perheensä hellässä hoidossa. Ensimmäistä kertaa tapasimme kun Salama oli noin 5 viikkoa vanha ja 10 viikon ikäisenä hän muutti meille perheenjäseneksi.
INDEED ARE!!! and at the same time I called to my husband, we get a puppy! And so began the joyful expectation. Salama was born in Kajaani and lived the first weeks in the loving treatment of Elina Tervonen and her family. For the first time we met when Salama was about 5 weeks old. And 10 weeks old, he moved to us as a family member.

Salama on meillä perheenjäsen, ja sen hyvinvointi on meille kaikille tärkeä asia. On kuitenkin joskus vaikea asettaa rajoja tai torua ja kieltää, vaikka sekin kuuluu emännän ja isännän tehtäviin. Pakko tunnustaa että tuo musta pieni karvakasa on kyllä kietonut meidät niin pauloihinsa että monet ”töllöntyöt” on saanut anteeksi vain ihanalla spanielin katseella.
Salama is our family member, and his well-being is an important issue to all of us. However, it is sometimes difficult to set limits or to scold and to deny, although it belongs to the hostess and host functions, too. Forced to recognize that this small pile of black hairs has captivated us so that many of his "torts" have been forgiven just with his lovely spaniel gaze.

Many times has this little Spaniel listened to and watched his head tilted when his hostess tells today's news and frets the things that went wrong.

Taking a puppy is always a big decision and should never be done if you are not ready to commit to his treatment. For us, this decision has always been easy. Our dog has always been master's and mistress's dog, never children's dog.

Salama on siis käyttölinjainen cockerspanieli ja tällä rodulla on erinomainen metsästysvietti. Käyttölinjainen on muodoiltaan sporttinen ja sillä on myös vähemmän karvaa kuin näyttelylinjaisella. Käyttölinjainen cockerspanieli on metsästäjän Taskuraketti, mallia Turbo.
Salama is thus a Working Line Cocker Spaniel by his breed, and this race has excellent hunting instincts. Working Line has sporty shapes and it also has less hair than the Show Cockers. Working Line Cocker Spaniel is a hunter's Pocket Rocket, model Turbo.
Koska halusimme koiran joka olisi myös Sepon kaveri metsällä, niin vuoden kohokohtia on syksyn metsästysretket ja reissut. Niitä odottavat sekä isäntä että koira.
We wanted a dog that would also be Seppo's friend out hunting, so the highlights of the year are autumn hunting trips and outings. They are waited both by the host and the dog.
Jo muutamana syksynä metsästysreissu on suuntautunut Ilomantsin kauniisiin maisemiin. Mukana reissussa on ollut myös Salaman ”kummi” Jouni. Näiltä reissuilta kotiutuu väsyneet ja onnelliset metsästäjät. Mikä parasta, myös saaliin makuun päästiin jo ensimmäisellä reissulla.
Already for a few autumns the hunting trip has been done to the beautiful landscape of Ilomantsi. Included on the road has been Salama's "godfather" Jouni. These trips have brought home tired and happy hunters. What's more, also hunting prey was received already on the first trip.

Myös koiralla, kuten meillä ihmisilläkin pitää perusasioiden olla kunnossa. Ruoka, liikunta, lepo ja perushoito ovat tärkeitä. On myös ollut ilo tutustua vastuullisiin koirankasvattajiin, joille koiran terveys on tärkeää. Pentujen terveyttä seurataan ja jo pennun ostohetkellä sovitaan esimerkiksi lonkkakuvauksista.
Also dogs, as well as humans, must have the basic things in order. Food, exercise, rest, and basic care are important. I have also had the joy to get acquainted with responsible dog breeders, to whom the dog's health is important. Puppies' health is monitored and for instance hip x-rays are agreed already at the moment the puppy is purchased.
Pitkät yksinoloajat ja monille tekemisen puute tuo suuriakin haasteita. Pitkästyttyään koira purkaa turhautumistaan ja seurauksena voi olla monenlaisia ongelmia. Tosin tuon ajan määrittäminen on aika vaikeaa, sillä kyllä meillä muutamat kengät ovat saaneet uuden muodon ihan lyhyen yksinolohetken aikana, ja aina tasaisin väliajoin lelut päätyvät lelujen ”taivaaseen”.
Being alone for a long time and lack of activity brings large challenges. After being bored the dog unloads his frustration and this can result in a variety of problems. However, defining that time is quite difficult, because we do have some shoes given a new shape during quite a short moment alone, and always at regular intervals toys end up to toys' "heaven".
Olen myös läheltä seurannut erilaisella ruokavaliolla kasvatettuja koiria. Meillä koiran ruokaa ovat kuivamuona, mutta esim. poikani koira Severi syö vain raakaruokaa. Molemmat koirat voivat hyvin ja ovat terveitä. Tosin ruokailut ovat haasteellisia, kun kummallakin on oma kuppi ja aina toisen kupissa olisi parempaa ruokaa.
I have also followed nearby dogs bred with different diets. With us the dog eats dry food, but for example Severi, my son's dog eats only raw food. Both dogs are doing well and are healthy. However, meals are challenging, as each has its own cup, and the better food would always be in the other's cup.
