Vuonna 1990 syntyi Jack Russellin terrieri Penny. Hän ei ollut ihan ensimmäinen Jack Russell Suomessa, mutta ensimmäisten joukossa kuitenkin. Pennyn äiti oli tuotu Englannista. Penny saatiin vaihtokaupassa antamalla myyjälle faksi. Ja nyt jos joku ei tiedä mikä faksi on, niin googleta hyvä ihminen.
In 1990, was born Jack Russell Terrier Penny. She was not the very first Jack Russell in Finland, but one of the first, however. Penny's mother was imported from England. Jack Russellin terrierejä ei silloin rekisteröity Suomessa. Eikä värillä ollut niin väliä. Tai pystyillä korvilla. Joskus jotkut yrittivät korvia vähän taivutella pentuna, mutta ei siitä paljon apua ollut. Hännätkin typistettiin, huh!
Jack Russell terriers were not registered in Finland at that time. And the color was not really a big deal. Or upstanding ears. Sometimes, some people tried to persuade the ears when the dog was a little puppy, but it was not of much help. And the tails were curtailed, huh!
Penny otettiin meille, kun poika meni ensimmäiselle luokalle kouluun. Sillä sympaattisella ajatuksella, että olisi joku kotona vastaanottamassa. Ei tarvitsisi lapsen tyhjään kotiin tulla. Ei ollut osittaista hoitorahaa silloin, että äiti voisi olla kotona. Ja leipäkin maistui leivälle.
Penny was taken to us while the son went to school. With the sympathetic idea that someone would be home receiving him after the school. The child would not have to come into an empty home. There was no partial care allowance at that time to allow mother be at home. And the bread tasted like bread then.
Suunnitelma toimi puolittain. Penny kyllä vastaanotti pojan koulusta kotiin. Mutta ei sitten laskenut enää ulos. Ei antanut ottaa kenkiä.
The plan worked half way. Yes, Penny received the son home from school. But didn't let him go out after that. She did not give him his shoes.
Kymmenen vuoden kuluttua Pennylle tuli yhtäkkiä mieleen tämä vanha tapa, ja hän yritti taas irvistellä kenkien vieressä. Hän ei vaan ollut ottanut huomioon, että poika oli jonkin verran kasvanut sitten ensimmäisen luokan. Pennyn kasvoilla oli järkyttynyt ja pettynyt ilme, kun murahdus tulikin toisin päin.
After ten years the old way came suddenly to Penny's mind, and she tried to grimace next to shoes once more. She just didn't take into account that the boy had grown somewhat since the first class at school. Penny's face was shocked and disappointed when the growl came from the other way around.
Kun Penny odotti ensimmäisiä pentujaan, hän ei ymmärtänyt, mitä hänen vartalolleen oikein oli tapahtumassa. Mutta pentujen synnyttyä hän oli maailman paras äiti. Pentuja oli kolme. Seuraavassa raskaudessa niitä oli peräti viisi, ja raskauden loppuaikana ressukan vatsa melkein viisti maata.
When Penny was waiting for her first puppies she did not understand what there was happening in her body. But after the puppies were born, she was the world's best mother. She got three puppies. After her next pregnancy there were as many as five puppies, and during the end of the pregnancy poor thing's belly almost bordered on ground.
Sen jälkeen Penny rakasti ylitse kaiken ja hoiti ihan kaikkia vauvoja: linnunpoikia, siilinpoikia, toisten koirien pentuja...
After that Penny loved and took care of all the babies: chicks, hedgehog sons, other dogs' puppies ...
Agilityssäkin käytiin, mutta kaikkein kovimmin Penny juoksi sitten, kun suoritus oli ohi ja poistuttiin radalta. Toinen kestosuosikki oli A-este. Sen päälle oli pienen koiran mukava pysähtyä tarkastelemaan maisemia vähän kauemmas. Ei ihan kuulunut agilityn sääntöihin ja kallista aikaa kului. Mutta hei, mistä olisi ollut paremmat näköalat?
To agility we went, too, but the hardest Penny then ran when the performance was over and we left the track. Another perennial favorite was the A-frame. For a small dog, it was very nice to stop on top of it to look at the scenery a little further. Not quite belonged to agility rules and took lots of precious time. But hey, what would have been a better view?
Penny oli 13-vuotias kun huomasin, että täysin vastoin luonnettaan hän tekee esteetöntä tuttavuutta ihan vieraiden ihmisten kanssa. Miten ennen niin varauksellinen koira hyppäsi suoraan vieraiden ihmisten syliin?
Penny was 13 years old when I found that quite contrary to her character she made acquaintance with complete strangers. How on earth earlier a reserved and shy dog jumped straight into the arms of strangers?
Myöhemmin selvisi, että vastaus oli dementia. Penny ei enää muistanut. Metsässä koira, joka ei ollut koskaan karannut, lähti omille teilleen. Sitten pitkän etsinnän jälkeen hän käveli meitä vastaan, ei ollut tuntevinaan ja hävisi taas.
Later it was discovered that the answer was dementia. Penny no longer remembered. In the forest the dog, who had never escaped went to her own separate paths. Then after a long search she walked towards us, didn't show any marks that she knew us and disappeared again.
Penny, se oli hieno viidentoista vuoden matka, me rakastamme sinua yhä!
